“We sense where we are when we are connected. I hope art and philosophy can be a tool that lets us know where we stand now. When I hear myself, the world comes to hear me. So I want people to set up antennas towards themselves. It's enough to be able to create your own, even if you are not familiar with it, rather than seeing and copying others.”

Ik-Joong Kang, who captures and records the world on 3-inches canvases, met Mark Tetto from Living Sense magazine.

Living and working in New York, Kang briefly visited Seoul to install the large public art work Gwanghwamun Arirang, presented at Gwanghwamun Square to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. Sharing their thoughts through the interview, they appreciated Kang’s works together - Things I know installed in Gallery Hyundai’s 50th anniversary exhibition, Gwanghwamun Arirang at Gwanghwamun Square, and Moon Jar owned by Mark.

Ik-Joong Kang shares the meaning of his work, artistic journey, and his special relationship with Nam June Paik. Focusing on "connection," a keyword that penetrates the world of his work, the interview provides a deeper understanding of the art and philosophy of the artist.

"서로 연결되어 있으면 자신의 위치를 알 수 있죠. 예술과 철학이 자신이 현재 어디에 서 있는지 알 수 있게 해주는 도구가 됐으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 사람들이 안테나를 자신을 향해 세웠으면 좋겠어요. 내가 나를 들을 때 세계가 나를 들으러 오거든요. 다른 것을 보고 따라 하는 것보다는 어눌해도 자기 자신만의 것을 만들어낼 수 있으면 돼요."

3인치의 작은 캔버스에 세상을 담아내고 기록하는 강익중 작가. 그가 리빙센스를 통해 마크 테토와 만났다. 

강익중은 현재 뉴욕에 거주하며 활동하고 있지만, 올해 6.25전쟁 70주년을 맞이해 광화문 광장에 선보인 대형 작품 <광화문 아리랑>의 설치를 위해 잠시 서울을 찾았다. 작가와 마크 테토는 갤러리현대 50주년 전시 《현대 HYUNDAI 50》 2부에 설치된 작품 <내가 아는 것>, 광화문 광장의 <광화문 아리랑>, 마크 테토가 소장한 <달항아리> 작품을 함께 감상하며 인터뷰를 진행했다. 

강익중 작가는 작품에 녹아 든 의미와 학창 시절, 작가가 된 계기, 백남준 작가와의 특별한 인연에 관한 이야기를 들려준다. 그의 작품 세계를 관통하는 키워드인 ‘연결’을 중심으로 한 인터뷰를 통해 예술과 철학에 대한 작가의 사유를 더욱 심층적으로 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
