Kim Tschang-yeul’s former residence and studio in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul, where the artist lived and worked for over 30 years, will open to the public as a contemporary art space at the end of May 2026. The first floor will house an exhibition space, the basement level an archive room, and the second basement level a reconstructed version of the artist’s studio and library.

Kim Tschang-yeul devoted his life to exploring the relationship between water droplets and the surfaces on which they rest, in a sustained inquiry into the essence of art. A total of 2,609 items, including 390 artworks, have been donated by his family, with a focus on preserving and recreating the artist’s life and practice. Materials such as canvases, tools, and books used during his lifetime will also be reproduced and displayed.

Kim Tschang-yeul once described his studio as follows: “For my work, I tend not to let light into the atelier. I rely instead on an inner light within a cave-like space.”

김창열 화백이 30여 년간 거주하며 창작 활동을 이어온 평창동의 자택이자 작업실이 5월 말에 공공미술공간으로 공개된다. 1층은 기획 전시실, 지하층은 아카이브실, 지하 2층은 작가의 작업실과 서재를 재현한 공간으로 구성된다. 

김창열은 평생에 걸쳐 물방울과 그것이 맺힌 표면 간의 관계를 탐구하며 예술의 본질에 접근해왔다. 유가족으로부터 작품 390점을 포함하여 총 2609점에 달하는 소장자료를 기증 받아 작가의 삶과 작업 흔적을 보존하고 재현하는 데 중점을 두고 있으며, 당시 사용하던 캔버스와 화구, 서적 등을 재현·전시할 예정이다. 

김창열 화백은 생전 작업실에 대해 다음과 같은 말을 남긴 바 있다. “나는 작업을 위해 빛을 아틀리에 안에 들이지 않는 편이다. 동굴 같은 곳에서 내면의 빛에 의지한다.”
