Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Moon Mind, a solo exhibition by Christine Sun Kim (b. 1980), on view from August 26 through October 18. Marking Kim’s first gallery exhibition in Korea and her first solo presentation with Gallery Hyundai, the exhibition will debut the artist’s shaped canvas paintings for the first time. Kim has long transformed personal experience into new forms of language rather than direct representation, exploring the social structures of sound and language through her practice. In Moon Mind, Kim shifts her focus toward the mind, memory, family, relationships with those around her, and her roots, presenting approximately thirty new shaped canvas paintings and drawings.

Christine Sun Kim’s practice studies how sound operates within society, addressing questions of sound, language, power, access, and social relations through a distinctive visual language. Working across drawing, performance, video, installation, large-scale murals, and public projects, Kim brings together American Sign Language (ASL), musical notation, written language, infographics, and humor as central elements of her work. Grounded in Deaf culture and her own experience, Kim examines the rules of communication assumed by a society organized around spoken language. Her work asks who gets to speak, who controls meaning, and which languages gain recognition in public space.

The exhibition title Moon Mind carries multiple layers of meaning that emerged as Kim looked more closely at her inner world and roots. In ASL, the signs for “mind” and “moon” both involve a tap on the temple, creating a connection between the two words. The moon also appears in expressions that refer to time and the past, such as “once in a blue moon” and “many moons ago.” At the same time, Kim’s daughter is named Dal, which means “moon” in Korean. For Kim, the moon connects the mind, family, time, language, and her roots as a Korean American artist. It is also a recurring symbol found across expressions, myths, and stories in many languages. In this way, Moon Mind introduces a new body of work that begins with the artist’s inner world and expands toward family, memory, cultural roots, and relationships with other minds.

갤러리현대는 8월 26일부터 10월 18일까지 김 크리스틴 선(1980년생)의 개인전 《달 마음(Moon Mind)》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 첫 국내 갤러리 전시이자 갤러리현대와 함께하는 첫 개인전으로, 작가의 셰이프드 캔버스 (shaped canvas) 페인팅 작업이 세계 최초로 공개된다. 김 크리스틴 선은 개인적 경험을 재현이 아닌 새로운 형식의 언어로 창조하며, 소리와 언어의 사회적 구조를 탐구해 왔다. 《달 마음》에서는 자신의 마음, 기억, 가족과 주변인들의 관계, 그리고 뿌리를 들여다보며 이를 시각화한 셰이프드 캔버스 페인팅과 드로잉 30여 점을 선보인다. 

김 크리스틴 선은 소리가 사회 안에서 어떻게 작동하는지를 탐구하며, 소리와 언어, 권력, 접근성, 사회적 관계의 문제를 시각 언어로 다루어 왔다. 드로잉, 퍼포먼스, 비디오, 설치, 대형 벽화와 공공 작업에 이르기까지 폭넓은 매체를 아우르는 그의 작업은 미국 수어(ASL), 악보, 문자, 인포그래픽, 그리고 유머를 주요 구성 요소로 삼는다. 작가는 농인 문화와 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 청인 중심 사회가 전제해 온 소통의 규칙을 드러내고, 누가 말할 수 있으며 누가 의미를 통제하는지, 또 어떤 언어가 공적인 공간에서 인정받는지에 대해 질문해 왔다.

전시 제목 《달 마음》은 작가가 자신의 내면과 뿌리를 깊이 들여다보며 떠올린 여러 층위의 의미를 담고 있다. 미국 수어에서 ‘마음’과 ‘달’은 모두 관자놀이를 두드리는 움직임으로 표현된다는 점에서 서로 맞닿아 있으며, 달은 “once in a blue moon”이나 “many moons ago”처럼 시간과 과거를 가리키는 표현 속에도 등장한다. 동시에 ‘달(Dal)’은 작가 딸의 이름이기도 하다. 작가에게 달은 마음, 가족, 시간, 언어, 한국계 미국인으로서의 뿌리를 연결하는 이미지이자, 세계 여러 언어의 표현과 신화, 서사 속에서 끊임없이 되돌아오는 보편적인 기호다. 《달 마음》은 이처럼 개인의 내면에서 출발해 가족과 기억, 문화적 뿌리, 그리고 또 다른 마음과의 관계로 확장되는 작가의 새로운 작업 세계를 보여준다.
