Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present works by the late Kim Tschang-yeul (1929–2021), a master of Korean abstract painting, and Seung-taek Lee (b. 1932), a pioneer of Korean experimental art, at Booth B15 in the Galleries sector of Frieze Seoul 2026. The gallery’s relationships with both artists span several decades. In 1976, Gallery Hyundai organized Kim Tschang-yeul’s first solo exhibition in Korea, who when he was based in Paris, introducing his iconic water drop paintings to Korean audiences for the first time. The gallery’s relationship with Seung-taek Lee began in 2009 through its collaboration on his interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist. As the first gallery to establish a sustained working relationship with the artist, Gallery Hyundai has worked closely with Lee ever since. While both artists share the historical experiences of the Korean War and displacement from North to South Korea, their distinct life trajectories and artistic methodologies have led them to forge singular bodies of work.

Despite their divergent methodologies and visual languages, the practices of Kim and Lee converge in their exploration of the boundaries between emergence and disappearance, reality and illusion. Kim transformed transient droplets of water, which form only to disappear, into enduring presences on the painted surface. Lee, by contrast, infused stones, fired clay, and found objects with a sense of vitality, destabilizing both their perceived material properties and conventional modes of perception. He also visualized immaterial phenomena such as wind, water, smoke, and fog, expanding them into materials for art. The two practices form a compelling counterpoint: while Kim gives permanence to a moment of disappearance on the painted surface, Lee sets seemingly fixed objects into a state of continuous transformation. Approaching these questions from opposite directions, their works move across the boundaries between the material and the immaterial, the momentary and the enduring, inviting us to understand existence not as a fixed entity but as a state of perpetual emergence and transformation.

갤러리현대는 프리즈 서울 2026 갤러리즈 섹터의 ‘부스 B15’에서 한국 추상회화의 대가 김창열(1929–2021)과 한국 실험미술의 선구자 이승택(1932–)의 작품을 함께 선보인다. 두 거장과 갤러리현대의 인연은 수십 년에 걸쳐 이어져 왔다. 1976년 당시 파리에서 활동하던 김창열의 초대전을 개최해 그의 물방울 회화를 국내에 처음 소개했다. 이승택과는 2009년 한스 울리히 오브리스트와의 인터뷰 협력을 계기로 인연을 맺어, 작가가 본격적인 협력 관계를 맺은 첫 갤러리로서 오랜 시간 함께해 왔다. 두 작가는 한국전쟁과 월남이라는 공통의 역사적 경험을 지니면서도, 서로 다른 삶의 궤적과 조형적 방법론을 통해 독자적인 예술세계를 구축해 왔다.

서로 다른 방법론과 조형 언어를 구사하는 두 작가의 작업은 생성과 소멸, 실재와 환영의 경계를 탐구한다는 점에서 맞닿는다. 김창열은 맺히고 사라지는 물방울을 화면 위에 옮겨 영속적인 존재로 구축했다. 이승택은 돌과 구운 흙, 일상에서 발견한 오브제의 고정된 속성에 생명력을 불어넣어 물질적 속성과 관습적인 인식을 뒤흔들고, 바람, 물, 연기, 안개 등 비물질적 현상을 시각화하며 예술의 재료로 확장했다. 한 작가가 사라지는 순간을 화면 위에 지속시키고, 다른 작가가 고정된 사물을 끊임없이 변화하는 상태로 열어 둔다는 점에서 두 작가의 작업은 흥미롭게도 대구를 이룬다. 서로 반대되는 방향에서 물질과 비물질, 순간과 지속의 경계를 넘나드는 두 작가의 작품은 존재를 고정된 실체가 아닌 끊임없이 생성되고 변화하는 상태로 바라보게 한다.
