Seulgi Lee 이슬기: Heumul Heumul

Seulgi Lee's solo exhibition Heumul Heumul is on view through September 25 at Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp in Cully, Switzerland. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, this micro-museum, measuring only a few dozen centimeters in diameter, is known as the smallest museum in the world and was established to honor Marcel Duchamp's artistic legacy. Seulgi Lee presents Heumul Heumul (2026), an installation in which a swirling glass sculpture contains water collected from Korea's Nakdong River. Evoking Marcel Duchamp's Air de Paris (1919), the work transforms the simple act of transporting a fragment of nature into a different context into a poetic experience.

Originating from mul, the Korean word for "water," and the onomatopoeic expression “heumul heumul,” the work centers on water's inherent qualities of constant flow and movement, visualizing the ways in which landscapes, cultures, and memories from different regions connect and circulate. Through water as a central medium, Seulgi Lee explores the relationship between tradition and modernity, the local and the global, and the movement and exchange of cultures, while offering a nuanced reflection on the connections between materiality, place, and memory.

이슬기의 개인전 〈흐물흐물(Heumul Heumul)〉이 스위스 컬리(Cully)에 위치한 쿤스트할레 마르셀 뒤샹(Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp)에서 9월 25일까지 열린다. 제네바호숫가에 자리한 이 지름 수십 센티미터 남짓의 초소형 미술관은 마르셀 뒤샹의 예술적 유산을 기리기 위해 설립된, '세계에서 가장 작은 미술관'으로 알려져 있다. 이슬기는 한국 낙동강에서 채집한 물을 소용돌이 형태의 유리 조형물에 담은 설치작품 〈흐물흐물〉(2026)을 선보인다. 마르셀 뒤샹의 〈에어 드 파리(Air de Paris)〉(1919)를 연상하는 이 작품은 자연 일부를 서로 다른 맥락의 장소로 옮기는 단순한 행위를 시적인 경험으로 전환한다. 

'물'이라는 단어와 의태어 '흐물흐물'에서 출발한 작품은 끊임없이 흐르고 이동하는 물의 속성에 주목하며, 서로 다른 지역의 풍경과 문화, 기억이 연결되고 순환하는 과정을 시각화한다. 이를 통해 이슬기는 전통과 현대, 지역성과 세계성, 문화 간의 이동과 교류를 '물'이라는 매개를 통해 탐구하며, 물질과 장소, 기억이 맺는 관계를 섬세하게 조명한다.
