Gallery Hyundai presents an artist talk featuring six participating artists from The Way of Painting, along with in-depth lectures by former Gyeongju University professor Byung Mo Chung and Joseon minhwa (Korean folk painting) collector Kim Sae-Jong, as part of the exhibitions Magnificence and Creativity: Variations in Korean Folk Painting. This program offers an opportunity to explore the timeless aesthetic values of Joseon minhwa and court painting, while examining the meaning and possibilities of Korean genre painting from multiple perspectives, together with contemporary artists.

• Introducing the Moderator
Dong Yeon Koh is an art historian, critic, and curator who earned her PhD in art history and film theory from the City University of New York (CUNY). Her research, writing, and teaching are focused on contemporary Korean art and visual culture, as well as issues of memory and history, and she has remained actively engaged in critical discourse across exhibitions and academic forums both in Korea and internationally. For the exhibition The Way of Painting, Koh contributed an essay titled “Contemporary Korean Genre Painting Proposed by Six Artists,” and for the artist talk, she will expand on the critical concerns raised in the essay and moderate in-depth conversations with the participating artists.

Paintings of Joseon Beyond Boundaries: Dialogues Between Court Painting and Minhwa

Lecture Introduction
This lecture explores the aesthetics of communication in Joseon dynasty painting by traversing the boundaries between Joseon court painting and minhwa. The refined iconography of the royal court flows into the warm sensibilities of the Joseon people, while the vibrant vitality of minhwa brings a fresh breath to Joseon court painting. Through theory and visual materials, the lecture aims to highlight the appeal and creativity of Korean minhwa and offers insights into reinterpreting traditional painting in a contemporary context.
About the Lecturer
Professor Byung Mo Chung is an art historian who focuses his research on minhwa and Korean genre painting. He is currently the principal of the School of Minhwa and a research fellow at the Odisha Art Center in India. He served for over 30 years in the Department of Cultural Heritage Studies at Gyeongju University and was a visiting professor at Rutgers University in the United States. He has held positions as a cultural heritage expert advisor for the Korea Heritage Service, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Gyeongsangbuk-do, as well as a specialist advisor for the National Research Foundation of Korea. Moving beyond text-centered research, he pursues an empirical approach to art history grounded in firsthand, on-site research of painting sites. He continues to conduct vivid and engaged art historical research by exploring the relevance of historical paintings in the contemporary world.

Through specific work analysis and examination of interest from collectors in Korea and abroad, it explores the global potential of traditional Korean painting.

Lecture Introduction
Centered on Kim Sae-Jong’s collecting journey, through which he discovered the beauty of minhwa amid numerous personal hardships following the International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis, this lecture examines the originality and aesthetics of Joseon minhwa. Based on a philosophy that pursues the painterly essence beyond iconography, Kim reinterprets the contemporary significance of minhwa and shares with the audience the “addictive quality” of Joseon minhwa that he has discovered.
About the Lecturer
Kim Sae-Jong is a collector who has been collecting minhwa for over 20 years from the perspective of viewing Joseon minhwa not as folk craft but as pure painting. He has organized major exhibitions such as Joseon Minhwa: Magpies and Tigers (2010), The Mystery of Beautiful Minhwa (2016), and Fantasia Joseon (2018), and has presented curated exhibitions at venues including the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and the National Asian Culture Center. He is also the author of The Taste of Collecting and I Found a Genius Painter of Joseon Minhwa.

고동연은 미술사가이자 비평가, 큐레이터로, 뉴욕시립대학교(CUNY)에서 미술사 및 영화이론으로 박사학위를 받았다. 한국 현대미술과 시각문화, 기억과 역사 문제를 중심으로 연구와 저술, 교육을 병행해왔으며, 국내외 전시와 학술 현장에서 활발한 비평 활동을 이어오고 있다. 이번 전시《화이도》에서는「6인의 작가가 제안하는 우리 시대 한국적인 장르화」라는 제목의 텍스트로 참여했으며, 전시 연계 아티스트 토크에서는 해당 글의 문제의식을 확장하며 모더레이터로서 작가들과의 심층적인 대화를 이끌 예정이다.

강사 소개
정병모 교수는 민화와 풍속화 분야를 집중 연구해온 미술사가로, 현재 한국민화학교 교장이자 인도 오디샤 아트센터 연구위원으로, 30여 년간 경주대학교 문화재학과에서 재직했으며 미국 러트거스대학 방문교수로도 활동했습니다. 문화재청, 서울시, 경상북도 문화재전문위원과 한국학술진흥재단 전문위원 등을 역임했으며, 문헌 중심의 연구를 넘어 회화 현장을 직접 조사하는 실증적 미술사를 지향합니다. 또한 옛그림이 현대에 가지는 의미를 탐구하며 생생한 미술사 연구를 이어가고 있습니다.

강사 소개
김세종 대표는 조선민화를 민예가 아닌 순수 회화로 바라보는 관점으로 20여 년간 수집 활동을 이어온 컬렉터이다.〈조선민화 까치 호랑이〉(2010), 〈불가사의의 아름다운 민화〉(2016), 〈판타지아 조선〉(2018) 등 주요 전시를 개최했고, 세종문화회관과 아시아문화전당 등에서 기획전을 이어왔습니다. 또한 『컬렉션의 맛』, 『나는 조선민화 천재 화가를 찾았다』를 집필했다.
