Moderated by Jane Kim (culture editor at The Atlantic), celebrated Korean American writers Cathy Park Hong, Ed Park, Alice Sola Kim, Gina Chung, and Hannah Bae will discuss their work in relation to the spirit of radicalism in the Korean diasporic imaginary. Set against the backdrop of Gallery Hyundai New York Project Space’s current exhibition of Shin Sung Hy’s Body of Work, we look forward to an enriching evening of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and honoring the stories of those who, like Shin, defied borders and categorizations in their life and work.
This conversation will center around Djuna’s speculative fiction Everything Good Dies Here and the historical recovery project of the Korean revolutionary Kim San (1905-1938), Song of Arirang, released by the Magpie Series, an imprint of Kaya Press, a well-regarded publisher of Asian and Pacific Island diasporas founded in 1994 in the United States.

갤러리현대 뉴욕 프로젝트 스페이스는 한국계 미국인 작가 5인 Cathy Park Hong(박홍), Ed Park(박준서), Alice Sola Kim, Gina Chung(정진아), Hannah Bae(배한나), 진행자 Jane Kim(김제인, 더 애틀랜틱 문화 섹션 에디터)와 함께 한국 디아스포라 속 급진적 정신의 역할을 토론한다. 신성희 작가의 뉴욕 개인전인 《Body of Work》를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 이번 라운드테이블은 장르 간 다학제적 대화를 촉진하고 신성희처럼 생애와 작업 전반에서 국경과 범주를 넘나든 예술가들의 이야기에 귀를 기울이고자 한다.
라운드테이블은 한국 디아스포라 문학의 현재와 과거를 대표하는 듀나의 사변적 픽션 단편집 《Everything Good Dies Here》와 혁명가 김산(1905-1938)의 행적을 복원하는 《아리랑》의 출간을 기념한다. 두 서적은 1994년 창립 이후 아시아 태평양 디아스포라의 계보에 초점을 둔 대표적 출판사로 자리잡은 카야 프레스(Kaya Press)의 한국 문학 번역 프로젝트 매그파이 시리즈(Magpie Series)의 일환으로 출판되었다.
본 프로그램은 브루클린 북 페스티벌의 ‘북엔드 이벤트’ 공식 행사로, 서던 캘리포니아 대학교(USC) 도니스라이프 한국학 연구소(Dornislife Korean Studies Institute)가 후원한다.
