Seung-taek Lee’s “non-sculpture” works will be on view at the Ilmin Museum of Art from August 22 to October 26 in the exhibition Figuration Circuits: Dong-A Art Festival and Its Era. Opening in 1978, the Dong-A Art Festival reignited the discourse on ‘form’ within Korean art, exploring new approaches that connected with the development of figurative art at the time.
In 1978, Lee was awarded the Dong-A Art Prize, affirming his pioneering role in experimental art at the time when the Korean art scene was largely defined by representation and abstraction. On view in this exhibition are Tied Stone and Torso, both key examples from Lee’s renowned “bound” series. By binding everyday objects with rope and wire, Lee dismantled the formal qualities of sculpture, redefining its boundaries while imbuing objects with traces of tension. At the time, these works represented an unprecedented experiment, introducing radical new possibilities for sculptural practice.

이승택의 비조각 작업을 일민미술관에서 8월 22일부터 10월 26일까지 열리는 《형상 회로: 동아미술제와 그 시대》에서 만나볼 수 있다. 전시는 1978년도에 개막하여 한국 미술에 ‘형상’의 논의를 재점화시켰던 동아미술제의 다양한 시도들이 동시대 한국의 구상 미술의 전개와 연결되는 지점을 탐색한다. 
이승택 작가는 1978년 동아미술상을 수상하며, 재현과 추상으로 치중되어 있던 당대의 미술계 분위기에서 실험미술의 선구자적 면모를 보여주었다. 전시에서 선보이는 〈매어진 돌〉과 〈토르소〉는 작가의 대표적인 ‘묶기’ 시리즈로, 다양한 사물을 노끈과 철사로 묶는 행위를 통해, 조각의 조형성을 해체함으로써 조각의 경계를 재정의하고, 사물과 긴장의 흔적을 부여하는 당시로는 매우 실험과 시도를 보여준다.
