The works of Quac Insik are currently on view in A World of Paintings: On the Lee Kun-hee Collection at the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art. Focusing on painting, one of the most enduring mediums in art history, the exhibition presents works by eight artists born between 1912 and 1952. These works are drawn from the Lee Kun-hee Collection, which was donated to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and regional museums in 2021, as well as from the collection of the Leeum Museum of Art.
Quac Insik’s artistic practice is grounded in his experimental approach to materiality, exploring the inherent properties of various objects and the fundamental nature of matter itself. This exhibition presents a selection of his representative works from the late 1970s, a period in which his deep-seated interest in materiality reached its peak. During this time, Quac began working extensively with paper creating compositions filled entirely with circular dots of varying tonal depth. His repeated gesture of layering color on both the front and reverse sides of the paper allowed the countless dots to overlap and seep through, imbuing the work with a sense of subtle movement while simultaneously evoking a luminous spatial depth that seems to extend beyond the surface.
곽인식의 작품이 서울시립북서울미술관에서 7월 20일까지 열리는 전시 《그림이라는 별세계: 이건희컬렉션과 함께》에 소개되고 있다. 2021년 국립현대미술관과 지역미술관에 기증된 이건희컬렉션, 리움미술관의 소장품을 기반으로 1912년에서 1952년생에 이르는 8인의 작가들의 작품을 선보이고, 미술에 있어 가장 오랜 역사를 가진 매체인 회화에 주목하는 전시이다.
곽인식은 사물을 있는 그대로 제시하여 사물의 물성을 탐구하고, 더 나아가 물질로 본질을 추구하는 작업을 선보였다. 전시에는 1970년대 후반부터 제작된 작가의 대표적 연작인 ‘점면 점화’가 소개된다. 이 시기는 종이에 그림을 그리기 시작하며 물질에 대한 관심이 절정에 이르는 때이다. 종이의 앞면뿐 아니라 뒷면에도 끊임없이 색을 쌓아나간 곽인식의 회화에서는 점들이 서로 겹치고 스며들어 움직임을 갖게 됨과 동시에 표면 너머로 깊은 빛의 공간감을 느끼게 한다.
