Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce its collaboration with Woosung Lee. Through the overarching theme of “Life and Art,” Lee explores the act of drawing and the expressive possibilities of painting through various media including drawing, painting, and animation. Observing social phenomena and individual reactions, he reflects on the world as a contemporary observer and translates these encounters into visual form. From family members and close friends to everyday scenes—a meal at a local diner, a bus stop, or the Han River Park—Lee is drawn to the people and places that hold personal resonance. His practice embraces themes such as youth, solidarity, humor, travel, family, and queer romance, offering a wide-angled view of contemporary life.
In his early career, Lee vividly depicted the daily lives of the Korean youth born after the 1980s through his signature lines and tonal palette. His work finds affinities with folk painting, genre scenes, Minjung art, and theater signboards. By appropriating the figurative language of Minjung art and infusing it with his own playful style and comic sensibility, he shifts away from its original context of activism and collective identity. Instead, Lee’s paintings—rendered in light, spirited colors—capture the intimacy of everyday moments and propose a looser, yet interconnected idea of “us.” A key format in his practice, the large-scale banner paintings go beyond the fixed canvas, enabling a fluid composition and dynamic engagement with space.
Over time, Lee’s focus has increasingly centered on the theme of “people,” extending from earlier works that depicted those close to him. His recent paintings capture everyday moments with quiet, affectionate gaze—a pair of friends laughing together on a porch, or three figures gazing at the sunset from an urban observatory. For Lee, painting is the voice and spirit of an era. He proposes a narrative structure in which each work contributes to a greater whole, suggesting that the meaning of life emerges from this collective assembly. His practice continues to represent the experiences and sensibilities of a generation living today.
As part of 55 Years: A Legacy of Modern & Contemporary Korean Art – Part II, Gallery Hyundai presents two new landscape paintings by Woosung Lee. In October 2025, the gallery will host the artist’s first solo exhibition, featuring an entirely new body of work.

갤러리현대는 이우성 작가와 함께합니다. 이우성은 ‘생활과 미술’이라는 주제로 드로잉, 회화, 애니메이션 등의 다양한 매체를 활용하여 그리는 행위의 의미와 그림의 표현 가능성을 실험해 왔습니다. 작가는 주변에서 벌어지는 여러 사회적 사건, 사람들의 반응을 보며 한 시대를 살아가는 사람으로서 그들의 이야기에 주목하고 이를 화면에 표현합니다. 그는 가까운 친구들이나 부모님을 작품의 모델로 삼기도 하고, 밥집의 상차림이나 버스정류장, 한강 공원의 풍경 등 그의 삶과 연결고리를 가진 대상에 관심을 가지고 청춘, 연대, 유머, 여행, 가족, 퀴어 로맨스 등 일상을 폭넓게 바라보며 주제로 삼아 왔습니다.
작업 초기, 이우성은 1980년대 이후 출생한 한국 청년 세대들의 군상과 그들이 겪는 일상을 특유의 선묘와 색조로 생생하게 표현했습니다. 이우성의 작업은 민화, 풍속화, 민중미술, 극장 간판 등의 표현양식에서 연결 고리를 찾을 수 있습니다. 작가는 민중미술의 구상적 묘사법을 활용해, 본인 특유의 그리기 법과 유머, 만화적 스타일로 표현합니다. 민중미술이 선전과 사회운동의 도구로 배너를 활용했다면, 밝고 경쾌한 색채로 일상적인 이미지를 담아내는 이우성의 작품은 혁명적 파토스나 집단적 주체성에서 벗어나 느슨하지만 연결되어 있는 ‘우리’를 보여줍니다. 걸개그림은 캔버스라는 고정된 화폭을 벗어나 유동적인 화면 구성 및 공간 점유가 가능한 형식이라는 점에서 작가가 심도 깊게 탐구해 온 방식입니다.
이후 이우성은 주변 인물을 그려왔던 작업 세계의 연장선상에서 이전보다 ‘사람’에 더 초점을 맞추게 됩니다. 대청마루에 앉아 웃고 있는 두 친구, 도심 속 전망대에서 아름다운 일몰 풍경을 바라보는 세 사람의 뒷모습 등 주위에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 모습들을 애정담은 시선으로 담아냅니다. 그에게 회화는 특정 시대의 목소리이며 시대의 영혼입니다. 이우성은 그림 개체가 모두 만나 전체를 이룰 때 삶의 의미가 드러난다고 하여, 모든 부분이 만나 전체를 이루어 구성하는 서사의 구조를 제시합니다. 이렇듯 그는 우리 시대를 살아가는 청장년의 삶과 미의식을 대변하는 작품을 지속해 오고 있습니다.
갤러리현대 개관 55주년 기념전 2부에서 이우성의 신작 풍경 회화 2점이 소개되며, 올해 10월에는 작가의 신작을 선보이는 갤러리현대에서의 첫 개인전이 개최될 예정입니다.
