"Back then [in the 1970s], the act of reading then cutting up a newspaper in itself caused tension among the audience. Given the severity of the political situation, people would whisper from the back, 'Is he going to get arrested?' As it were, Reading Newspapers was a work that created voids by cutting out articles and words. I was constantly questioning the vanished meaning and potentiality of the void. Removing the text left me with the photos alone. I found the dangling images to be quite fascinating." - Sung Neung Kyung

A pioneer of Korean experimental art, Sung Neung Kyung will be performing Reading Newspaper at Guggenheim New York on November 17th and 18th. As part of the museum's public program series of the current exhibition, Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s, the performance will be live streamed on their Instagram on the 17th. A merge of newspapers, photography, and action, Reading Newspaper is a unique performance that encapsulates Sung's distinctive artistic world as well as an iconic work that decorates a page in the history of Korean contemporary art.

“(1970년대) 그 당시엔 신문을 읽고 오리는 행위만으로 관객에게 긴장감을 줬어요. 정치적 상황이 엄혹했기에 사람들은 뒤에서 ‘저 사람 잡혀가는 것 아니야?’라며 수군거렸죠. 말하자면 ‘신문 읽기’는 기사를, 언어를 오림으로써 여백을 만드는 작업이었어요. 여백이 만든 사라진 의미, 잠재태가 무엇인지를 자꾸만 제시하려 했던 거죠. 기사를 제거하니까 남는 건 사진뿐이었죠. 종이에 대롱대롱 매달린 사진이 상당히 매력적인 거예요.” – 성능경 

한국 개념미술을 개척한 선구자 성능경 작가가 구겐하임 뉴욕에서 11월 17일과 18일에 〈신문읽기〉 퍼포먼스를 실행한다. 미술관에서 개최중인 《한국실험미술 1960-1970년대》의 전시 연계 프로그램으로, 17일 인스타그램을 통해 라이브 스트리밍 된다. 〈신문 읽기〉는 신문, 사진, 행위가 융합된 성능경만의 독자적 작품 세계를 대표하는 퍼포먼스이자, 한국 현대미술사의 한 페이지를 장식하는 아이콘과 같은 작품이다.
