Lee Ufan (b. 1936) will be the subject of a comprehensive retrospective held at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Germany, on October 25. This milestone exhibition marks the artist’s first solo show in the country almost half a century after his presentation at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 1978, and will showcase approximately fifty of Lee's iconic works created over these past five decades.
The museum introduces Lee Ufan as one of the most prominent figures of Mono-ha (もの派) in Japan and Dansaekhwa in Korea. An art collective active in Tokyo from 1968 through 1975, Mono-ha (School of Things) redefined existing concepts of art by exploring the encounter between natural—such as stones, branches, or soil—and industrial—such as steel or glass—materials and representing their interdependent relationship by means of sculptures and installations. Lee’s writings became the theoretical crux of Mono-ha and his sculptural series Relatum is considered iconic of the movement. Consecutively in Korea from the mid-1970s, Dansaekhwa emerged as artists began to explore abstraction and materiality through monochrome paintings, to which Lee’s representative painting series, From Point and From Line, are inextricably connected.
Relatum (1977), from the permanent collection of the Nationalgalerie, will be installed in the museum gardens, while other seminal works by Lee will be displayed alongside Rembrandt’s famous Self-Portrait with Velvet Beret (1634), creating an incisive dialogue between Eastern and European perspectives. The exhibition will remain open through March 10, 2024.
이우환 화백(1936년 출생)의 회고전이 독일 베를린에 소재한 동시대 미술관 함부르크 반호프(Hamburger Bahnhof)에서 10월 25일부터 개최된다. 쿤스트할레 뒤셀도르프의 개인전 이후 거의 50년 만에 독일에서 열리는 대규모 전시에는 50여 년에 걸쳐 제작된 이우환의 대표작 50여 점을 선보인다.
미술관은 이우환 작가를 일본의 모노하(もの派)와 한국의 단색화 운동의 가장 중요한 작가로 소개한다. 1968년부터 1975년 사이 일본 도쿄에서 전개된 예술가 집단인 모노하는 돌과 나뭇가지, 흙과 같은 천연 재료나 철과 유리 등의 산업 재료를 결합한 조각과 설치 작업으로 사물을 재배치함으로써 예술의 개념을 재정의하였다. 이우환의 철학적 글쓰기는 모노하 운동에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며, 그의 〈관계항〉 시리즈는 모노하를 대표하는 작품으로 꼽힌다. 한편, 1970년대 중반 한국 예술가들은 모노크롬 회화를 통해 추상성과 물질성을 탐색하는 단색화 운동을 전개했다. 이우환의 〈점에서〉, 〈선으로부터〉 시리즈가 이에 속하는 연작이다.
미술관의 정원에는 베를린 국립미술관(Nationalgalerie)의 소장품인 〈관계항〉(1977)이 전시되며, 전시장에는 이우환의 작품과 렘브란트의 유명한 자화상 〈Self-Portrait with Velvet Beret〉가 함께 걸려 그의 작품 세계와 유럽 미술의 관계를 다층적으로 살필 예정이다. 전시는 2024년 3월 10일까지 이어진다.
