Ongoing special exhibition Archive Rhythm (July 21–October 29, 2023) at Gyeongnam Art Museum, Korea, features artist Lee Kun-Yong’s iconic works from the 1970s including Same Area, Five Steps, Eating Hardtack, and Bodyscape as well as related documentations such as video, photograph, drawing, and artist notes. In particular, the exhibition highlights the relationship between art archives and a given artist’s style, philosophy, and constitutive elements of their work.
Lee Kun-Yong (1942–) represents the first generation of Korean Experimental art. As a founding member of Space and Time (ST) group that formed 1969, and as an active member of Avant-Garde (AG) group, he took part in the very origin and development of Korean performance art. He posed the fundamental question of “What is art?” in resistance to formalist trends in Modernism, seeking a logical response to the question through various methods of concept, performance, and installation. He also took interest in linguistic analytic philosophy and phenomenology, which became the basis for his emphasis on the communication between art and society, wherein he investigated with logic the structures of the world and the meaning of ours.
Presenting in 1975 the first performances using his own body, Same Area and Indoor Measurement, under the title of Event-Form of Now (現身), Lee Kun-Yong spotlighted the logical conditions connecting a work of art to the result of an act. Then, he transferred this concept and methodology into a series of performances entitled “Event-Logical.” “Event Logical,” the germination of Lee Kun-Yong’s singular practice, embodies his unique aesthetic and contemplation surrounding ideas of location, actions, body, language, and painting.
이건용 작가가 1970년대 발표한 대표작인 〈동일면적(Same Area)〉, 〈다섯 걸음(Five Steps)〉, 〈건빵 먹기(Eating Hardtack)〉, 〈신체드로잉(Bodyscape)〉을 비롯해 영상, 사진, 드로잉, 작가노트의 지시문 등 100여 개가 넘는 관련 기록물을 한 자리에서 만날 수 있는 기획전 《아카이브 리듬》(2023. 7. 21 - 10. 29)이 경남도립미술관에서 개최 중이다. 전시는 한 작가의 작업 스타일과 철학, 작품을 구성하는 요소와 ’미술 아카이브‘의 관계를 집중적으로 조명한다.
이건용(1942- )은 한국 실험미술 1세대 작가로 1969년 ST(Space and Time 조형학회)를 결성하였고 AG(한국아방가르드 협회)의 일원으로 활동하면서 한국 행위미술의 시작과 발전의 궤적을 함께 해왔다. 작가는 형식주의 모더니즘 미술에 대한 반발과 ‘예술이란 무엇인가’라는 근원적인 물음을 제기하며 개념, 행위, 설치 등 다양한 방식으로 시대적 질문에 대한 논리적인 답변을 찾아내고자 했다. 또한 그는 언어분석철학과 현상학에 관심을 두고 예술과 사회의 소통을 중시하며 세계의 구조와 삶의 의미를 논리적으로 탐구하고자 하였다.
이건용은 1975년 〈이벤트-현신(現身)〉이라는 제목으로 자신의 신체를 이용한 최초의 퍼포먼스인 〈동일면적〉과 〈실내측정〉을 발표하면서 작품과 행위의 결과 사이의 논리적 조건을 강조하였다. 작가는 이러한 개념과 방법론을 행위로 옮긴 일련의 퍼포먼스를 ‘이벤트-로지컬’이라 지칭하였다. 이건용 작품 세계의 출발점이 되는 ‘이벤트-로지컬’에는 장소, 행위, 신체, 언어, 회화에 관한 그만의 독창적 미학과 사유의 정수가 담겨 있다.
