Gallery Hyundai is proud to present a performance “Reading Newspapers” by Sung Neung Kyung, a pioneering figure in Korean experimental art, joined by one hundred participants of non-Korean nationalities, on Wednesday, September 6 at 9pm in Lightroom Seoul in Godeok-dong.
Combining newspapers, photography, and action, "Reading Newspapers" is a unique performance that encapsulates Sung Neung Kyung's distinctive artistic world as well as an iconic work that decorates a page in the history of Korean contemporary art. First showcased at the “Four-person EVENT” at Seoul Gallery in 1976, "Reading Newspapers" is exactly what its title suggests: the artist audibly reads a newspaper aloud and uses a razor blade to cut out sections of the newspaper articles. In “Newspaper: After June 1, 1974” performed in 1974, which is considered to be the precedent of the “Reading Newspapers,” the artist affixed newspapers to four white panels prepared on the gallery wall and proceeded to cut out articles, section by section, with razor blades, then placing the excised articles in acrylic boxes. "Newspaper: After June 1, 1974" and "Newspaper Reading" were physical gestures of resistance by a young artist against the political regime of that time. Subsequently, Sung Neung Kyung utilized photographs from newspapers in the ongoing series "Venue," incorporating newspapers, photography and drawing together.
Lately, the artist has maintained the basic framework of "Reading Newspapers" while expanding it into a "collaborative" performance by inviting participants. The overarching structure of each performance is developed considering factors such as the location and characteristics of the performance venue and the diverse racial, cultural, and social backgrounds of the participants. Sung Neung Kyung explains: "Reading newspapers as a group and collectively cutting articles is like a choir or ensemble, an act of 'cooperating together.' Furthermore, this attempt of transformation represents an open-minded attitude, transitioning from a 'fixed art act' to an 'open act.'"
On September 6th at 9pm, one hundred participants of non-Korean nationalities will join “Reading Newspapers” at Seoul Art Night, which will take place at Lightroom Seoul. Participants hail from continents all over the world including Europe, Asia, and North and South Americas, with nationals from Spain, Germany, China, Russia, Brazil, India, the Philippines, United States, the Netherlands, and Poland, among others. The upcoming iteration of Sung's iconic performance will be the largest since its first showcase in 1976, offering a glimpse into current events from all parts of the world in which we live.
Sung Neung Kyung's “Reading Newspapers” is the inaugural program of Seoul Art Night. In celebration of Frieze Seoul 2023 and Kiaf SEOUL 2023, Gallery Hyundai has partnered with international galleries such as Esther Schipper, Tokyo Gallery+BTAP, Petzel, and Lisson Gallery, along with Crypto Art Seoul, which is the first-ever crypto art festival in Asia. The event is supported by Porsche Korea and Pernod Ricard Korea.
In addition to Sung’s performance, the event will feature various performances, including Lee Hee Moon OBSG4BS, who infuses modern sensibilities into Korean folk songs and presents music from diverse genres. Also, there will be a performance by musician and producer 250, who trace the essence of Korean popular music through projects like "Finding Ppong" and NewJeans. The event encompasses performance art, live performances, and DJ sessions, creating a dynamic blend of creative urges.

〈신문 읽기〉는 신문, 사진, 행위가 융합된 성능경만의 독자적 작품 세계를 대표하는 퍼포먼스이자, 한국 현대미술사의 한 페이지를 장식하는 아이콘과 같은 작품이다. 1976년 서울화랑에서 열린 〈4인의 EVENT〉전에서 초연된 〈신문 읽기〉는, 제목 그대로 작가가 혼자 소리내어 신문을 읽고 면도날로 읽은 기사 부분을 오려 내는 행위로 구성된 퍼포먼스다. 그는 〈신문 읽기〉의 전신이라 할 〈신문: 1974.6.1 이후〉(1974)에서 전시장 벽면에 준비된 4장의 하얀 패널에 신문을 게시하고 기사 단위별로 면도날을 사용하여 오려내는 행위를 펼치고, 오려낸 기사는 아크릴 통에 버렸다. 〈신문: 1974.6.1 이후〉와 〈신문 읽기〉는 당대 유신 체제에 맞서는 젊은 예술가의 저항의 몸짓이었다. 이후 작가는 〈현장〉 연작을 통해 신문의 보도사진을 작업의 매체로 활용하며 신문, 사진, 드로잉 행위가 혼합되는 작품을 선보이게 된다.
최근 작가는 〈신문 읽기〉의 기본 틀을 유지하면서도 혼자가 아닌 여러 사람들이 참여하는 '협동'의 퍼포먼스를 펼치고 있다. 퍼포먼스가 실행되는 장소의 위치와 특성, 참가자의 다양한 인종적 문화적 사회적 배경 등을 고려하여 공연의 큰 틀이 구성된다. 작가는 “단체로 신문을 읽고 기사를 오려내는 행위는 합창이나 중창을 하는 듯한 ‘협동 하기질’이며, 나아가 이러한 변환의 시도가 ‘고착된 예술 행위’에서 ‘열린 하기질’로의 개방적 태도를 견지한다”라고 설명한다.
9월 6일 수요일 저녁 9시, 라이트룸 서울에서 열리는 〈Seoul Art Night〉에서 공개되는 〈신문 읽기〉에는 100인의 외국인이 함께한다. 이들은 스페인, 독일, 중국, 러시아, 브라질, 인도, 필리핀, 미국, 네덜란드, 폴란드 등 유럽과 아시아, 북남미 등이 모국이다. 1976년 세상에 공개된 이후 사상 최대 규모로 진행되는 〈신문 읽기〉 퍼포먼스로, 서로 다른 언어의 신문을 다 같이 읽는 단체 행위를 통해 동시대 세계 곳곳의 다양한 현시를 보여줄 예정이다.
성능경의 100인과의 〈신문 읽기〉 퍼포먼스는 〈Seoul Art Night〉의 프로그램 중 하나다. 〈Seoul Art Night〉은 Kiaf와 Frieze Seoul의 개막을 기념해, 갤러리현대가 주축이 되어 에스더 쉬퍼(Esther Schipper), 도쿄화랑(Tokyo Gallery + BTAP), 펫츨(Petzel), 리슨 갤러리(Lisson Gallery) 등의 세계적 갤러리와, 아시아 최초의 크립토 아트 페스티벌인 크립토 아트 서울(Crypto Art Seoul)이 연합으로 준비한 아트 이벤트이다. 또한 포르쉐(Porsche) 코리아, 페르노리카코리아가 후원한다. 성능경의 〈신문 읽기〉 퍼포먼스 이외에도 한국 민요에 현대적 감각을 입혀 다양한 장르의 음악을 선보이는 이희문 OBSG4BS, 뉴진스의 프로듀서이자 '뽕을 찾아서'라는 프로젝트를 통해 한국 대중음악의 본질을 추적하는 음악가 250의 공연 등 퍼포먼스 아트, 라이브 공연, DJ 세션이 어우러질 예정이다.
