Earlier this June, Ayoung Kim became the first-ever Korean artist to be awarded the Golden Nica in the New Animation Art category of Prix Ars Electronica. Kim’s award-winning video work Delivery Dancer’s Sphere (2022) will be showcased at the Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition as part of the Ars Electronica Festival 2023, held from September 6 to September 10, in Linz, Austria.
New Animation Art, the category for which Kim was awarded the Golden Nica, is an integral part of Prix Ars Electronica which focuses on groundbreaking image-making approach at the intersection of new visualization techniques and new forms of communication. As a prizewinner, the artist will participate in not only the Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition 2023 in POSTCITY, but also in related events such as screenings and talks. During the festival, six screenings of Delivery Dancer’s Sphere will take place from September 8 through September 10 at the Ars Electronica Center’s Seminar Room. The work will also be shown at “Animation Festival: Electronic Theatre” on September 8. In addition, on September 9, Kim will take part in a presentation and panel discussion with jury members and fellow New Animation Art category awardees titled “Prix Forum: New Animation Art,” where she will engage in discourse on the intersection of art and technology. On September 10, an immersive screening of Delivery Dancer’s Sphere, traversing the walls and floor, will take place at Deep Space 8K.
Furthermore, in October, the artist will participate in Frieze London’s new section Artist-to-Artist. In celebration of the fair’s 20th anniversary, this new initiative invited eight internationally acclaimed artists—Olafur Eliasson, Tracey Emin, Simone Leigh, Wolfgang Tillmans, Alvaro Barrington, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Anthea Hamilton, and Haegue Yang—to propose artists for solo exhibitions at Frieze London. Proposed by Haegue Yang, Ayoung Kim’s solo showcase booth for Artist-to-Artist will include Delivery Dancer's Sphere which was featured in her solo exhibition Syntax and Sorcery at Gallery Hyundai in 2022, the installation Ghost Dancers A (2022) which elaborates on the unique worldview of Delivery Dancer's Sphere, and Evening Peak Time Is Back (2022), a wallpaper installation created in collaboration with the Korean webtoon artist “1172.” These recent works come together as an installation that provides a compact overview of Kim’s creative practice.
지난 6월, 한국인 최초로 세계 최대 규모의 미디어아트 어워드 2023 프리 아르스 일렉트로니카(Prix Ars Electronica)에서 최고상인 골든 니카상(Golden Nica)를 수상한 김아영의 작품 〈딜리버리 댄서의 구〉(2022)가 오스트리아 린츠에서 9월 6일부터 10일까지 열리는 아르스 일렉트로니카 페스티벌(Ars Electronica Festival)의 프리 아르스 일렉트로니카 수상작 전시(Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition)에 출품된다.
김아영 작가가 골든니카상을 수상한 뉴애니메이션 아트 섹션은 시각예술, 혼합현실, 설치, 인터렉티브 등의 전 영역을 포괄하는 프리 아르스 일렉트로니카의 핵심 섹션이다. 작가는 수상작인 〈딜리버리 댄서의 구〉로 참여하여 시상식과 POSTCITY에서 열리는 전시 이외에도 스크리닝과 아티스트 토크 등 다양한 행사에 참여한다. 페스티벌 기간 중 9월 8일(금)부터 9월 10일(일)까지 여섯 차례에 걸쳐 아르스 일렉트로니카 센터 세미나룸에서 작품을 선보이고, 8일(금)에는 “애니메이션 페스티벌: 일렉트로닉 시어터(Animation Festival: Electronic Theatre)”에서도 여러 차례 상영이 될 예정이다. 또한 9일(토) 오후 2시에는 뉴애니메이션 아트 섹션 수상자들의 발표 및 아티스트 토크 “프리 포럼: 뉴애니메이션 아트(Prix Forum: New Animation Art)”에 작가가 직접 참여하여 예술과 기술이 교차하는 지점에서 다양한 관람객들과 만나볼 예정이며, 10일(일)에는 딥스페이스 8K의 벽과 바닥을 가로지르는 프로젝션 공간에서 특별 상영을 할 예정이다.
또한 김아영 작가는 올 10월에 프리즈 런던의 신설 섹션인 “아티스트-투-아티스트(Artist-to-Artist)” 섹션에 참여한다. 프리즈 런던의 20주년을 기념하여 신설된 섹션으로, 올라퍼 엘리아슨, 트레이시 에민, 시몬 리, 볼프강 틸만스, 알바로 베링턴, 리크리트 티라바니자, 앤시아 해밀턴, 그리고 양혜규를 포함한 현대미술을 이끌고 있는 작가 여덟 명이 각각 다른 작가를 한 명씩 지목하여 개별 작가의 솔로 부스를 선보일 수 있는 새로운 플랫폼이다. 양혜규 작가가 김아영 작가를 지목하여 솔로 부스가 확정되었다. 프리즈 런던에서 김아영은 지난 2022년 갤러리현대 개인전에서 선보였던 대표작 〈딜리버리 댄서의 구〉와 그 세계관을 반영하는 설치작 〈고스트 댄서 A〉, 그리고 웹툰작가 1172와 협업하여 완성된 〈다시 돌아온 저녁 피크타임〉, 총 세 점을 출품하여 작품 세계를 집약적으로 보여주고자 한다.
