“Usually, a painter paints something on the twodimensional surface that he or she is facing. In my case I place the panel in front of my body and draw lines as far as my body allows without being able to see the pictorial surface. So it is not that I draw something on the two-dimensional surface while seeing it with my eyes, as my conscious instructs me. Rather, it is to represent the process through which my body perceives the two-dimensional surface, via the lines drawn by the movements of my arm.” - Lee Kun-Yong
’76-1,’ the first variation of Lee Kun-Yong’s Bodyscape series, is currently on view at Pièce Unique in the historic Marais district of Paris, France. First presented in 1976, the Bodyscape series consists of simple line paintings that are performed by the artist while keeping his body in a restrictive state. Leaving behind rough yet organic marks on the pictorial plane, each work reflects the essence of Lee’s ideas and his original aesthetic concerning the body, place, and relationships.
Pièce Unique, opened in 1989, is an open space where artwork is on view 24/7 through a window. Currently operated by Massimo De Carlo, the space is designed by the legendary Italian gallerist Lucio Amelio in collaboration with Cy Twombly. Prior to Frieze Seoul, the space will host consecutive solo presentations by six Korean artists including Lee Kang-So and Lee Kun-Yong.

이건용의 <Bodyscape> 연작의 첫 번째 변주인 ’76-1’이 프랑스 마레 지역에 있는 마시모 드 카를로 피에스 유니크(Pièce Unique)에서 소개되고 있다. 1976년 첫 발표한 <Bodyscape> 연작은 작가가 신체를 제한한 상황에서 간단한 선 긋기 동작을 수행하며 화면에 흔적을 남기는 방식으로 완성되며, 신체, 장소, 관계에 대한 이건용만의 독창적 미학과 사유의 정수가 담겼다.
‘피에스 유니크’는 24시간 윈도우를 통해 작품을 관람할 수 있는 오픈 공간으로, 전설적인 이탈리아 갤러리스트 루치오 아멜리오가 1989년에 사이 톰블리와 함께 디자인하여 개장했으며, 현재는 마시모 드 카를로에서 운영 중이다. 프리즈 서울이 개최하기 전까지 이 공간에서 이강소, 이건용 등 6명의 한국 작가의 개인전이 5일씩 열렸다.
