The August issue of Esquire Magazine features an insightful interview with artist, Chung Sang-Hwa. The artist and the editor of the magazine, Park Sehoi, met at Dugahun restaurant in midsummer to discuss the concepts of planes, breath, and Chung’s artistic journey spanning over half a century.
"I devoted myself solely to painting for more than 70 years. What we refer to as painting is such an intricate thing. It is intricate and strange at the same time. The Korean proverb ‘it is a nose ring if it is hung on the nose, and an earring if it is hung on the ear,’ implies that the interpretation can vary depending on the circumstances. That is the essence of art. Art is such a thing, and that is precisely what art is. Sometimes when we say the proverb sarcastically to talk about things as if they are insignificant, I believe that very notion of insignificance holds artistic significance."

〈에스콰이어〉 매거진 8월호에 정상화의 인터뷰가 소개되었다. 지난 7월 한여름 두가헌 레스토랑에서 정상화와 〈에스콰이어〉의 박세회 디렉터가 만나, 평면, 호흡, 전위와 반세기 넘게 작업에 몰두한 작가의 심도 있는 작품 세계에 대해 이야기 나눴다.
“근 70여 년 동안 그림 하나만 그렸습니다. 그림이라고 하는 게 참 기교한 것이지요. 기교한 것이면서 또 기이한 겁니다. 코에 걸면 코걸이 귀에 걸면 귀걸이라는 말이 있지요. 이래도 되고 저래도 되는 것. 그게 바로 예술입니다. 예술이란 그런 것이고 그런 것이 바로 예술입니다. 우리는 가끔 아무것도 아닌 걸 비아냥거리듯이 얘기할 때 ‘코에 걸면 코걸이 귀에 걸면 귀걸이’라고 하잖아요? 그런데 아무것도 아니라는 것 자체가 예술의 관점에서는 상당히 의미심장한 겁니다.”
