The June issue of LUXURY magazine features an interview with artist Chung Sang-Hwa, whose exhibition Infinite Breath is currently on view at Gallery Hyundai. The interview, which took place in May at his studio in Yeoju, Geyoggi-do, includes the artist's worldviews on art and planarity.
“If we overthink what ‘plane’ means, it can get endlessly complicated. The plane I talk about here is not the plane surface we usually think of. Rather, there is the plane that we see vertically, the plane we see from the top down, the plane we see from the bottom up – a square plane exists in all of the places where our eyes touch. The scope is infinite since we are also part of that plane. My work cannot exist outside the two-dimensional plane because, within my work, I am constantly peeling off and filling in in various ways. I can say that it is thoroughly the plane – a flat surface. I also believe that there’s a certain “heart” to it – something that goes in and out as if the heart beats and something that is lively as if the blood flows.”

〈럭셔리〉 매거진 6월호에 전시 《무한한 숨결》을 개최한 정상화 화백의 인터뷰가 실렸다. 지난 5월, 경기도 여주에 있는 정상화 화백의 작업실을 찾아가 진행한 인터뷰에는 정상화 화백이 생각하는 평면성, 예술관 등의 이야기가 실렸다.
“평면이라는 게 어렵게 생각하면 한이 없어요. 내가 얘기하는 평면은 우리가 흔히 생각하는 평면은 아니죠. 세로로 보이는 평면, 위에서 아래로 볼 때의 평면, 아래에서 위로 올려봤을 때 보이는 평면처럼 우리 시선이 닿는 곳에는 모두 네모반듯한 평면이 존재하는 겁니다. 우리도 그 평면에 소속되는 거니까 그 범위가 무한한 거지. 나의 작업은 어디까지나 평면을 떠나서는 성립할 수가 없어요. 작품 안에서 평면을 이렇게 저렇게 뜯어내기도 하고, 메우기도 하니까. 철저하게 평면이라고 말할 수 있어요. 또 나는 ‘심장성’ 같은 게 거기 존재한다고 봐요. 심장이 뛰듯이 들어갔다가 나오고, 피가 흐르듯이 생동하는 존재인 셈이죠.”
