Earth Performance by the artist Seung-taek Lee will be re-enacted on Earth Day, April 22 at Governors Island Parade Ground in New York by duo artists based in New York, Ayoung Yu and Nicholas Oh, in collaboration with Luyan Li.
Since the early 1990s, the Earth Performance was performed in numerous venues including, but not limited to, the Com-Art group exhibition in Suwon in the early 1990s, Seoul International Performance Art Festival, Saitama, Japan, and in Beijing, China in 2000. As part of the artist’s solo exhibition Things Unstable currently held at Canal Projects, this performative piece of work Earth Performance will be shown in the States for the first time. The re-enactment is co-produced by Governors Island Arts and Canal Projects.
The Earth Performance is a participatory performance, wittily covering environmental issues, involving various spectators engaging in the activity of rolling and pushing the three-meter oil-painted rubber balloon, as a realistic copy of the Earth. As such activity of rolling the object continues, the rubber balloon is ripped and scratched, and the scarring Earth (the rubber balloon) is gradually flattened, releasing the air inside it. Through this visual and tactile, sensory experience, the activity imparts the message to the participants that our care is vitally needed for the planet in order to preserve the ecosystem. This work is a collaborative work reflecting the artist’s interest and aims to communicate with the audience regarding the matter of environmental issues, which can also be defined as an environmental campaign insisting on prompt actions for the preservation of the biosphere.

이승택 작가의 〈지구행위〉 퍼포먼스가 4월 22일 지구의 날, 뉴욕 거버너스 아일랜드 퍼레이드 그라운드에서 뉴욕을 베이스로 활동 중인 젊은 작가 듀오 아영 유 & 니콜라스 오와 루옌 리에 의해 재연된다.
1990년대 초반부터 시작된 〈지구행위〉는 1990년대 초반, 수원의 컴아트 그룹 전시를 비롯하여 2000년 《서울국제행위예술제》와 일본의 사이타마, 중국의 베이징 등에서 선보였다. 미국에서 최초로 공개되는 이번 〈지구행위〉 퍼포먼스는 커낼 프로젝트에서 열리고 있는 이승택 작가의 개인전 《Things Unstable》의 일환으로, 커낼 프로젝트와 거버너스 아일랜드 아츠(Governors Island Arts)의 공동 제작으로 이뤄진다.
〈지구행위〉는 직경 3미터의 고무풍선에 유화 물감으로 사실적으로 그린 지구를 다양한 사람들과 함께 굴리고 밀고 나아가며 환경과 생태주의에 관한 문제를 유쾌하게 풀어내는 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스이다. 관객들이 고무풍선을 굴리면 굴릴수록 찢어지고 긁혀 상처가 나는 지구(고무풍선)는 점차 공기가 빠지면서 납작하게 오그라든다. 지구의 생태계를 보존하기 위해 돌봄이 필요하다는 메시지를 직접 참여한 관객들에게 시각과 촉각 등의 감각적 경험을 통해 전달한다. 이는 환경 문제를 대중과 소통하려는 작가의 관심과 의도가 반영된 관객 참여형 작품이자 생태계 보존을 위한 행동을 촉구하는 환경 캠페인이라 할 수 있다.
