The renowned non-material performance, Wind-Folk Amusement by artist Seung-taek Lee will be reenacted on February 25 at Hudson River Park in New York by the young artist duo, Ayoung Yu and Nicholas Oh, and the Korean shaman Jenn based in New York. This marks the first public showing of the piece in the United States, almost half a century since its first official debut at Hongik University in 1970. Wind-Folk Amusement is a collaborative project linked to Seung-taek Lee’s solo exhibition Things Unstable taking place at the Canal Projects. The performance was organized with an active collaboration with Hudson River Park.

Wind-Folk Amusement is a “non-material” work representing Seung-taek Lee’s "non-sculpture" world. When examining art history, Seung-taek Lee thought that works had been visually realized through the creative formulation of forms and color and wondered if works could be made by denying the fixed form. Meanwhile, he created the Wind series visualizing the wind using cloth, allowing for auditory and tactile experiences. Wind-Folk Amusement is an extension of the version first executed in the late 1970s based on concept drawings made in 1971. By holding the ends of a red fabric that flutters in the wind, the work demonstrates the movement of the wind and allows the viewers to experience tension generated by the wind and the sound produced by the friction of the red fabric.

As the artist could not be present on site for the Wind-Folk Amusement, in advance, he took part through phone calls and Zoom meetings with the curators of the Canal Projects and the two artists leading the performance. He encouraged them to freely visualize the existence of Wind based on their instant judgments, just as he previously did with the weather conditions on-site. 

In addition, the Earth Performance will take place in the Manhattan area on April 22 (Earth Day), where the audience can join in the activity of rolling and pushing the realistically oil-painted 3-meter rubber balloons representing the earth to cover environmental and ecological issues. Seung-taek Lee’s solo exhibition runs until May 22, 2023. 

이승택 작가의 대표적 비물질 퍼포먼스 <바람-민속놀이>가 2월 25일에 뉴욕 허드슨 리버 파크에서 뉴욕을 베이스로 활동 중인 젊은 작가 듀오 아영 유 & 니콜라스 오와 무당 젠에 의해 재연된다. <바람> 퍼포먼스는 1970년 홍익대학교에서 공식적으로 대중에게 첫 공개된 이후 약 반세기만의 재연이자 미국에서의 최초 공개이다. 본 퍼포먼스는 커낼 프로젝트에서 기획한 이승택 작가의 개인전 《Things Unstable》의 연계 프로젝트로 허드슨강 공원 측의 적극적인 콜라보레이션으로 성사되었다.

<바람-민속놀이>은 이승택 작가의 ‘비조각’ 세계를 대표하는 비물질 작업이다. 이승택은 미술의 역사를 살폈을 때 작품들이 형태와 색채의 창의적인 조형을 통해 물질적으로 시각화되어 왔다는 점을 거꾸로 뒤집어 생각하며, 고정된 형태를 부정하는 것으로 작품을 만들 수 있지 않을까 고민한다. 그러던 중 천을 이용하여 바람을 시각화하고 동시에 청각, 촉각까지 체험할 수 있게 하는 <바람> 시리즈를 1970년 전후에 제작한다. 이번에 공개되는 <바람-민속놀이>는 1971년에 그린 컨셉 드로잉을 기반으로 1970년대 후반에 최초 실행되었던 버전의 확장으로, 붉은 천의 양쪽 끝을 잡고 펄럭이는 천을 통해 바람의 움직임을 보여주고, 바람에 의해 발생하는 장력과 붉은 천과 천이 마찰하며 일으키는 소리를 체험할 수 있게 한다. 

이번 <바람-민속놀이>에 관하여, 현장에 직접 참여할 수 없는 작가는 사전에 캐널 프로젝트의 큐레이터, 퍼포먼스를 이끌어갈 두 작가와 사전에 전화와 줌 미팅을 진행했다. 현장의 날씨 조건에 맞춰 자신이 그러했듯 즉각적인 판단 아래 마음껏 <바람>의 존재를 시각화하면 된다는 격려의 말을 남겼다. 

이외에도 4월 22일 지구의 날에는, 약 3m의 고무풍선에 유화 물감으로 사실적으로 그린 지구를 다양한 사람들과 함께 굴리고 밀고 나아가며 환경과 생태주의에 관한 문제를 유쾌하게 풀어내는 <지구 행위> 퍼포먼스를 맨해튼 일대에서 선보일 예정이다. 이승택 작가의 개인전 《Things Unstable》은 5월 22일까지 열린다.
