Pioneering Korean avant-garde artist Seung-taek Lee's solo exhibition Things Unstable will be presented at Canal Projects in New York City from February 3 to May 22, 2023. Canal Projects, a nonprofit art organization established in September 2022, introduces innovative and forward-thinking artists to the American art scene. A total of 17 major works by Lee, including those reflecting the artist's signature concepts of "non-material," "binding," and "photo pictures," will be on view.
Active since the 1950s, Seung-taek Lee’s oeuvre spans diverse genres from painting, photography, and sculpture to performance art and land art. In line with the artist’s statement that "My view was inverted, My life in this world was inverted," his works reverse preconceptions and ideas about objects defined as art while evoking new thoughts and senses in viewers. Seung-taek Lee’s world of “non-sculpture” can be divided into two primary categories. The first is the artist's "non-material" series, consisting of installations and performances in which natural phenomena that lack physical volume—such as wind, smoke, or fire—are "sculpted" into moments that viewers can experience visually. The artist’s other major body of work is his "binding" series, in which he forgoes conventional methods of sculpting or shaping to present everyday objects that are literally bound or that bear the marks of binding.
In Drawing - Wind Performance, a work that the artist created the specifically for this exhibition, a red line is drawn over a photo of the Canal Projects building in Soho, New York. In a dramatic evocation of the drawing, a swath of red fabric will be installed and hung on the façade of the Canal Projects building during the exhibition’s opening week. Likewise, the artist’s monumental work Wind, in which he sought to “visualize” the wind by hanging blue fabric between buildings at Seoul’s Hongik University in 1970, will be presented for the first time in New York. Wind is one of the major elements of Lee Seung-taek's "non-material" practice; here, the formless natural phenomenon of wind is transformed into a work of art that spurs a visual, auditory, and tactile response in the viewer.
In addition, two special re-enactments of Lee's groundbreaking historical performances will be presented during the exhibition period. Lee’s Wind – Folk Amusement will be performed along the Hudson River on February 25, 2023 by young artists living in New York, and on April 22 (Earth Day), participants in Manhattan can take part in Earth Performance, where they will roll and push 5-meter-high rubber balloons resembling the Earth in recognition of pressing issues facing the environment. A lecture by a Korean researcher of the avant-garde and a talk program are also scheduled.

한국 아방가르드 미술의 선구자 이승택 작가의 개인전 《Things Unstable》이 뉴욕의 현대미술 기관인 커낼 프로젝트에서 2023년 2월 3일부터 5월 22일까지 개최된다. 커낼 프로젝트는 비영리 미술기관으로 2022년 9월에 개관하여 아시아 및 세계적으로 혁신적인 작품 세계를 선보이는 작가를 미국 미술계에 소개하고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 이승택 작품세계의 핵심 개념인 ‘비물질’과 ‘묶기’와 관련된 연작과 ‘포토픽처’ 등 대표적 신작과 구작이 17여 점 소개된다.
이승택은 1950년대 이후 현재까지 설치, 조각, 회화, 사진, 대지미술, 행위미술 등을 넘나들며 왕성한 작품활동을 펼치고 있다. ‘나는 세상을 거꾸로 보았다. 거꾸로 살았다’는 작가의 말처럼, 그의 작품들은 미술로 규정된 고정관념과 사물에 대한 관념을 뒤집고 보는 이에게 새로운 사고와 감각을 환기한다. 이승택의 ‘비조각’ 세계는 크게 두 범주로 구분된다. 하나는 바람, 연기, 불과 같은 물질적인 양감이 없는 자연 현상을 우리가 시각적으로 체험할 수 있도록 순간적으로 ‘조각’한 설치 및 퍼포먼스 형식의 ‘비물질’ 시리즈와 소조하거나 조각하는 방식을 벗어나 일상의 사물을 묶거나 혹은 매어진 흔적을 간직한 오브제 형식으로 마무리되는 ‘묶기’ 시리즈이다.
특히 이번 전시를 위하여 작가는 뉴욕의 커낼 프로젝트 건물 사진에 붉은 선을 긋는 드로잉 작업 <드로잉 - 바람 퍼포먼스>을 제작했다. 커낼 프로젝트는 전시 오프닝 주간 동안 <드로잉 - 바람 퍼포먼스> 를 기반으로 붉은 천을 제작하여 실제 커낼 프로젝트 건물의 파사드에 설치할 예정으로, 1970년 홍익대학교 건물 사이에 푸른색 천을 매달아 바람을 시각화한 기념비적 작품 <바람>이 최초로 뉴욕에서 소개된다. <바람>은 바람이라는 형체 없는 자연 현상을 작품으로 끌고 와 보는 이에게 시각과 함께 청각, 촉각의 반응을 동시에 불러일으키는 이승택의 ‘비물질’ 작업의 핵심 작품이다.
또한, 붉은 천의 양쪽 끝을 잡고 바람의 움직임을 시각화하는 작가의 <바람-민속놀이> 퍼포먼스가 뉴욕에 거주하는 젊은 작가들에 의하여 2월 25일 허드슨강에서 펼쳐진다. 4월 22일 지구의 날에는, 약 5m의 고무풍선에 지구를 그리고 이를 다양한 사람들과 함께 굴리고 밀고 나아가며 환경과 생태주의에 관한 문제를 유쾌하게 풀어내는 <지구행위> 퍼포먼스를 맨해튼 일대에서 선보일 예정이다. 이외에도 한국 아방가르드 연구자의 강연과 더불어 토크 프로그램도 예정되어 있다.
