In celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the Lee In-sung Art Prize, Yoo Geun-Taek is presenting a special exhibition Dialogue at the Daegu Museum of Art. The Lee In-sung Art Prize was established by the city of Daegu in 1999 to commemorate the achievement and artistic spirit of Lee In-sung, who left a great impact in the history of Korean modern art, and to support mid-careered contemporary artists in the Korean art scene.
Yoo Geun-Taek, the recipient of the 22nd award, captures and presents poetic and dramatic narratives and images behind the small and ordinary moments of everyday life. In the exhibition, viewers encounter 49 representative works organized by different period of the artist’s career from the early 1980s and 90s to the new works painted in 2022. In particular, major works including the 40-meter-long masterpiece Remains – Toccata_Running capturing the moments of modern and contemporary history through a life of his grandmother; Scenery Outside Window, transforming daily life into a pictorial scene; Some Landscape, reflecting the anxious, chaotic global situations due to the pandemic and wars; and Fountain, depicting the authority of Time and the ephemerality of the human existence on a impactful screen, are gathered to showcase Yoo’s artistic career and his endeavors to expand the boundaries of traditional ink and wash paintings through themes, subject matter, materiality, and expression. The exhibition runs until January 15, 2023.
유근택 작가의 제22회 이인성미술상을 수상 기념 개인전 《대화(Dialogue)》가 대구미술관에서 개최되었다. 이인성미술상은 한국 근대미술사에 큰 족적을 남긴 대구 출신 故 이인성 화백의 정신을 기리고, 국내 중견 회화작가를 적극 후원하여 한국 현대미술의 발전에 기여하고자 1999년 대구시가 제정한 미술상이다. 제22회 수상작가인 유근택은 《대화(Dialogue)》를 통해 우리가 살고 있는 일상의 소소한 순간들 이면에 시적이고 극적인 서사와 이미지를 포착하여 선보인다.
이번 전시에는 작가의 1980-90년대 초기작부터 신작까지 대표작 49점을 시간에 따른 변화를 살필 수 있도록 시대별로 구성했다. 특히, 할머니의 인생을 통해 한국 근현대사를 보여주는 40m의 대작 〈유적 – 토카타(질주)〉와 일상을 회화적 장면으로 변모시킨 〈창밖을 나선 풍경〉, 전염병과 혼란스러운 세계정세 속의 불안을 담은 〈어떤 풍경〉, 분수의 상승과 하강의 운동성을 담고 시간의 권능과 인간 존재의 덧없음을 힘찬 화면으로 그려낸 〈분수〉가 대표적인 작품으로 소개되며, 새로운 주제, 물질성, 표현 등을 통해 전통적인 수묵과 수묵화의 경계를 넓히려는 시도를 보여준다. 전시는 2023년 1월 15일까지.
