Gallery Hyundai Booth of Freeze Masters was selected as the ‘Best Booth 10 of Freeze Masters’ by ARTnews. Gallery Hyundai Booth E1 presents Lee Kang-So's solo presentation, showcasing the artist's creative world of work made from the 1970s to the 1990s.
“Amid the bustle of Frieze, Gallery Hyundai’s booth feels like an oasis of tranquility. Dedicated to the multidisciplinary oeuvre of influential South Korean artist Lee Kang-so, who came to prominence in the 1970s, it features painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and serigraphy on burlap. But what lends the booth its calm ambience is a series of meditative large grayscale paintings executed in rough, rhythmic brushstrokes that form a backdrop for Lee’s poetic installation Paljido (Eight Battle Array) - stacks of brick, wood, clay, rope and stones, each with a single rock perched on top. “갤러리현대의 부스는 프리즈의 분주함 속에서 평온한 쉼터 같다. 부스는 1970년대부터 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 실험적인 작업들로 한국 미술계에 주요한 작가로 부상한 예술가 이강소의 70년대 대표작들과 함께 90년대의 대형 캔버스 작업을 선보인다. 이강소의 시적 설치물 <팔진도>와 그것의 배경을 형성하는 거칠고 리드미컬한 붓놀림의 명상적 대형 회색 톤의 회화는 부스에 차분한 분위기를 형성한다. 벽돌, 나뭇가지, 점토, 밧줄 더미 위에 각각 하나의 바위가 위에 자리 잡고 있다.
