Minjung Kim’s artist book TRACES is published. The title of the book TRACES, meaning vestiges, remains by definition, synchronizes with the ritualistic work process in a peaceful mindset and the concepts of circulation of nature that motivate Minjung Kim’s oeuvre. Minjung Kim’s artworks always embark from Korean hanji paper.
Hanji is the Korean traditional paper, a material that holds the persistent beauty that endures thousands of years. The artist’s ritualistic act of evening her breath before burning Korean paper, then the repetitive, labor-intensive process of meticulously placing those pieces of paper by hand completes each piece. Furthermore, it reflects her intention to visualize in the language of contemporary art revelations of East Asian philosophy such as reincarnation, Yin and Yang, emptiness and fullness.
TRACES is produced by SYL, a Barcelona-based printing house, well-acknowledged for printing and publishing special artbooks. Printed in the limited edition of 300, this book entails 39 pieces of Kim’s representative works, selected by the artist herself, and the artist notes that reflect Kim’s philosophical contemplation. Each copy features a signature, hand-signed by the artist, and an edition number written by a professional calligrapher. The delicate hanji strips with burned edges, the same pieces used in creating Kim’s artwork, are added to each copy. The book presents delicate traces of burning resulted from candlelight or incense fire on a large plane in the size of 55.9 by 41.2 cm.
Celebrating the publication of Minjung Kim’s artist book, Gallery Hyundai is also hosting a special exhibition of the limited-edition artist book and Kim’s works of different series from 31 August to 14 September. TRACES will also be showcased at the Flesh Soul: Bacon/Ghenie exhibition hosted by Christie’s from 3 September to 5 September at Boon the Shop, Cheongdam.

김민정 작가의 아티스트 북 《TRACES》가 출간되었다. ‘자취,’ ‘흔적’과 같은 의미를 가진 책의 제목 “TRACES”는 작가의 수행적인 작업 과정과 평화로운 마음의 상태, 그리고 자연으로 돌아가는 순환의 개념을 담은 그의 작품 세계와 일맥상통한다.
김민정 작품의 출발점에는 늘 한지(종이)가 자리한다. 한지는 한국의 전통적인 종이이면서 수천 년의 세월을 견디는 강인함과 아름다움을 담은 재료이기도 하다. 작가는 마치 수행을 하듯 호흡을 가다듬어 한지를 불로 태우는 행위, 그 조각을 섬세하게 배열하는 반복적이고 노동 집약적인 수작업을 통해 작품을 완성한다. 윤회, 음(陰)과 양(陽), 비움과 채움 등의 동양 철학적 사유를 동시대 미술 언어로 시각화한 그의 작품은 자연의 힘과 절제의 감각을 우리에게 일깨운다.
아티스트 북 《TRACES》는 스페인 바르셀로나에 소재한 예술서적의 인쇄와 출판으로 명성 높은 SYL을 통해 300권 한정판으로 제작됐다. 책에는 작가가 직접 셀렉한 작품 세계를 상징하는 대표작 39점과 철학적 사유가 담긴 아티스트 노트가 함께 수록되어 있다. 모든 책에는 아티스트의 친필 서명과 전문 캘리그래퍼가 작업한 에디션 넘버가 새겨져 있고, 작품에 실제로 사용하는 그을린 한지 스트립이 부착되어 소장 가치를 더한다. 한지를 촛불이나 향불로 태워 완성한 김민정 작품 특유의 섬세한 디테일을 55.9 x 41.2 cm의 대형 판형으로 감상할 수 있다.
김민정의 아티스트 북 출간을 기념하며 갤러리현대는 8월 31일부터 9월 14일까지 아티스트 북과 다양한 연작을 엄선한 팝업 전시를 개최한다. 김민정의 아티스트 북은 9월 3일부터 5일까지 청담 분더샵에서 열리는 《Flesh Soul: Bacon/Ghenie》전에서도 만날 수 있다.
