"It isn’t easy to feel the actual change. And yet, change is happening gradually, as if soft water breaks hard stone. I consider this metaphor as an offer to perceive change for a span longer than a person’s lifetime." -Kang Seung Lee

Kang Seung Lee participates in the 5th New Museum Triennial Soft Water Hard Stone. The exhibition features works by 40 artists and collectives from 23 countries and it is co-curated by Margot Norton, Allen and Lola Goldring Curator at the New Museum, and Jamillah James, Senior Curator at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). The title originates from a Brazilian proverb: Água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura (Soft water on hard stone hits until it bores a hole). This proverb connotes that one can achieve what one has aspired through persistence, and that effort over time can destroy even the most solid materials.

Lee’s works are curated to mark the beginning of the New Museum Triennial. Signature pieces of the artist, such as drawings and embroidery are exhibited; hyper-realistic graphite drawings with intense details and delicate embroidery with antique gold thread on Sambe are presented. Some of the works include: Untitled (Pebble from Tapgol Park) (2018) and Untitled (Pebble from Prospect Cottage) (2018), that commemorate and connect the lives of a Korean civil rights activist Joonsoo Oh (1964-1998) and a British film director Derek Jarman (1942-1994) as well as Untitled (Harvey) (2020), that depicts the cactus owned by the first openly gay Californian politician Harvey Milk (1930-1978). The artist’s delicate and labor-intensive works transcend the suppressed narratives of the queer community to his unique visualization. The 5th New Museum Triennial runs from October 28th, 2021 to January 23rd, 2022.

“살면서 변화를 체감하기란 쉽지 않지 않나. 하지만 변화는 미세하게라도 일어나고 있다. 결국에는 낙숫물이 바위를 뚫는 것처럼. 나는 이 메타포를 어떠한 변화를 한 개인의 생의 줄기를 넘어서서 바라보는 관점을 가져보자는 제안이라고 생각한다.” - 이강승

이강승 작가가 제5회 뉴뮤지엄트리엔날레 “부드러운 물 단단한 돌(Soft Water Hard Stone)”에 참가한다. 23개국의 40명의 작가와 컬렉티브가 참여하며, 뉴뮤지엄의 앨런앤로라골드링 큐레이터인 마고 노튼과 로스앤젤레스현대미술인스티튜트의 시니어 큐레이터인 자밀라 제임스가 함께 기획했다. 전시 제목은 '여린 물이 단단한 돌이 닳아 구멍이 날 때까지 부딪친다'라는 브라질 속담에서 유래했다. 이 속담은 꾸준함은 갈구하는 바를 성취하게 하고, 지속적인 노력은 결국 가장 단단한 무엇도 파괴할 수 있다는 의미를 가진다.

트리엔날레의 시작을 알리는 자리에 이강승의 작품이 주요작으로 전시되고 있다. 이번 전시에는 작가를 대표하는 드로잉과 삼베 금실 자수 작업이 출품된다. 사실적으로 정밀 묘사한 흑연 드로잉 작품과 얇은 금실로 세심하게 자수를 새긴 삼베 작업을 선보인다. 각각 영국과 한국에서 게이 인권을 위해 활동했던 인권운동가 오준수(1964-1998)와 영화감독 데릭 저먼(1942-1994)의 삶을 기리며 병치한 프로젝트의 대형 드로잉 <Untitled (Pebble from Tapgol Park)>(2018)와 <Untitled (Pebble from Tapgol Park)>(2018), 그리고 캘리포니아 최초의 오픈리 게이 정치인 하비 밀크(1930-1978)의 유품이자 그가 생전에 돌보던 선인장 <Untitled (Harvey)>(2020)를 포함한 작업들을 만나볼 수 있다. 작가 특유의 섬세함과 노동집약적인 작업을 통해 잘 알려지지 않았던 퀴어 커뮤니티의 억압된 이야기를 시각적 표현으로 승화한다. 제5회 뉴뮤지엄트리엔날레는 2021년 10월 28일부터 2022년 1월 23일까지 개최된다.

이강승은 오는 11월 17일 갤러리현대에서 첫 개인전을 앞두고 있다.
