Myoung Ho Lee, an internationally renowned photographer produced his new work Tree… #12 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Export-Import Bank of Korea. The artist also plays a role as a model for the Export-Import Bank of Korea’s advertisement, which will be broadcast on TV from the end of June. The production process of Tree… #12 is released through the advertisement. Tree… #12 was photographed at Hwaseong Dinoistenesaur Site in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. The Hwaseong Dinoistenesaur Site was designated as a natural monument in 2000 in recognition of not only evidence that it was a habitat for dinosaurs, but also important academic material for environmental and ecological research of the time. The object, which was nothing more than an ordinary tree standing in a wide field, is transformed into an object of art by the artist hanging a canvas behind it.
Myoung Ho Lee is well known by his representative series work Tree. He has been working on a series of photographs, "Photography-Act Project," since 2004, featuring a profound search for respect for human and nature and the reproduction of images. Among them, in the Tree series, the artist separates the object from its original natural context, creating a "painting-like photograph" that looks like a landscape painting. On the other hand, the canvas within Nothing, But, merely stands. Having relinquished the function of revealing or creating something, the canvas encompasses everything precisely because it does not offer anything in specific.
Including the Tree and Nothing But, Myoung Ho Lee’s representative works are currently on view at Korea Eximbank, Seoul. The exhibition runs through 31 July.

“평범한 나무 뒤에 캔버스를 설치함으로써 그 나무는 평범하지 않게 돼요. 김춘수의 <꽃>이라는 시가 있는데, ‘내가 너의 이름을 불러주었을 때 너는 나에게로 와서 꽃이 되었다.’라고 말해요. 하찮지만 내가 의미를 부여하면 세상에 하나밖에 없는 꽃이 되는 거예요.” – 이명호
사진가 이명호가 한국수출입은행 45주년을 기념하여 <나무> 연작의 새로운 작품 <Tree… #12>를 제작하였다. 작가는 6월 말부터 TV를 통해 송출되는 한국수출입은행 광고의 모델로 직접 활약하며 <Tree… #12>의 제작과정을 공개했다. <Tree… #12>는 경기도 화성시의 공룡알화석산지에서 촬영되었다. 공룡알화석산지는 이 일대가 공룡의 서식 근거지라는 증거일 뿐 아니라, 당시의 환경과 생태계 연구에 중요한 학술 자료임을 인정받아 2000년 천연기념물로 지정되었다. 너른 벌판에 서 있는 한 그루의 평범한 나무에 지나지 않았던 대상은 작가가 캔버스를 그 뒤에 드리움으로써 예술의 대상으로 변모한다.
이명호는 그의 대표적인 연작 <나무> 작품으로 잘 알려졌다. 그는 인간의 자연을 향한 경의와 이미지의 재현에 관한 심오한 탐구를 담은 사진 연작 “사진-행위 프로젝트”를 2004년부터 진행해오고 있다. 그 중 <나무> 시리즈에서 작가는 나무라는 대상을 원래의 자연적 맥락에서 분리함으로써, 마치 풍경화처럼 보이는 ‘그림 같은 사진’을 만들어낸다. 반면, 2018년에 첫 선을 보인 연작 <Nothing But>의 캔버스는 자연 속에 덩그러니 서 있다. 캔버스는 무언가를 드러내거나 채우는 역할에서 벗어나, 텅 빔으로써 모든 것을 품는다.
이명호 작가의 작품 10여점을 여의도에 위치한 한국수출입은행 본점에서 만나볼 수 있다. 그의 대표 연작 <Tree>와 <Nothing But>을 한 자리에서 소개하는 이번 전시는 7월 31일까지 개최된다.
