In my 2018 project Garden, I shared works of drawing, installation, and video that remembered and recorded the lives of Derek Jarman (1942 - 1994) and Oh Jun-su (1964 - 1998). They campaigned for gay rights in Britain and Korea, respectively, and they both died in the 1990s of complications from AIDS.

Between 2016 and 2018, I made several visits to Jarman’s garden at Dungeness in the Kent region of England. In 2017 and spring 2018, I was able to stay at the garden’s cottage at the invitation of Jarman’s partner Keith Collins (1964-2018), who kept the garden for over a decade after Jarman’s death. I collected plants from a garden that Jarman himself had picked out and designed, creating drawings and gold thread embroideries to show sculptures within the garden that had been made out of a combination of scrap metal, old lumber, and nearby rocks and stones. It was like an intensive, performative record of Jarman’s life and what he left behind – commemorating the powerful, noble life of an activist who resisted homophobia and social stigma associated with AIDS.

The video work Garden raises questions about two of the oldest acts related to death, namely “burial” and “recording”. Going back and forth between Prospect Cottage and Namsan in Seoul, I cut out and buried part of a drawing I had produced on paper made from animal hide. With this ritualistic act, I wanted to connect the lives of Jarman, Oh jun-su, and the countless others we do not remember, while showing the history of LGBTQ people and their oppression and resistance against AIDS. The stigma and disease that have been erased from mainstream history are recorded and shared in a different language that goes beyond human memory, In the form of soil, plants, and the objects we leave behind.

나는 2018년 <Garden> 프로젝트를 통해 데릭 저먼(Derek Jarman, 1942-1994)과 오준수(1964-1998)의 삶을 기리고 기록한 드로잉과 설치, 비디오 작품을 선보였다. 두 인물은 각각 영국과 한국에서 게이 인권을 위해 활동했으며, 90년대에 에이즈 합병증으로 세상을 떠났다.

비디오 작업 <Garden>은 죽음을 둘러싼 오래된 행위인 ‘묻는 것’과 ‘기록하는 것’에 질문을 던진다. 나는 프로스펙트 코티지와 서울의 남산을 오가며 그 곳의 흙을 채집했고, 흙을 한 데 뒤섞어 도기로 빚고 전시장 곳곳에 설치했다. 또한 동물가죽으로 만든 종이 위에 드로잉한 작품의 부분을 잘라내어 프로스펙트 코티지와 서울의 남산에 묻었다. 이러한 제의적 행위를 통해 나는 데릭 저먼과 오준수, 그리고 우리가 기억하지 못하는 수많은 삶들을 연결하고 성소수자와 에이즈라는 질병에 대한 억압과 저항의 역사를 드러내고 싶었다. 주류 역사에서 지워진 낙인과 질병의 역사는 흙과 식물, 우리가 만들고 남긴 오브제를 통해 이미 인간의 기억을 넘어선 다른 언어로 기록되고 전달되고 있다.
