Walking along the path into the first gallery of the 13th Gwangju Biennale Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning, Promise Park in Gwangju (2021) by Moon Kyungwon sits widely on the floor as if creating its own space and territory. Promise Park in Gwangju (2021) is a part of a larger project of the same title that explores the symbolic meaning of park, which reflects history, the past time and space. Moon considers the role of park as a platform for collective intelligence and a space for building solidarity. And, she proposes park as an abstract concept embedding zeitgeist instead of simply recognizing its public physicality.

“Promise Park project proposed a concept of park as a symbol of history, accumulated time and the memories of space. Throughout research, this project recalls the unknown memories, that have been buried in the earth of park. People who gathered thought of the lessons taught by this space. They challenged what has socially been pursued as the norm and redefined the meaning of park as a new platform. Promise Park is an exploration of manmade civilization, system, hierarchy, the lost human cognition in consequence and the traces of failed history as well as a seeking of potential symbiosis.” - Moon Kyungwon

In particular, Promise Park in Gwangju provides a platform of social communication across generations, building empathetic community and solidary alliances. Here, “park” is a witness who has experienced the dynamic history, regional industrialization of the city and its growth into a global cultural platform. The artist referred to old maps of the city to reinterpret transforming urban landscapes as a pattern of invisible traces and weaves diverse narratives of the city into a medium of carpet. Throughout this process, Moon collaborated with cognitive scientists, architects, regional cultural researchers, scholars of Chinese astrology, and other specialists from various fields to continue examination of urban planning, social practices, and cognition.

Initiated from the past time and space, and a series of events and memories, Moon often delves into the function and symbolism of space, continuously influenced by passing time. In other words, rather than only reflecting on the past, the artist focuses on the meaning of ‘park’ from a present and furthermore, future stance. 

제13회 광주비엔날레 <떠오르는 마음, 맞이하는 영혼(Minds Rising, Sprits Tuning)>의 제1전시실 전시실 입구의 통로를 따라 들어가면 문경원 작가의 <프라미스 파크>(2021)가 그만의 공간과 영역을 생성하듯이 넓게 펼쳐진다. <프라미스 파크>는 문경원이 지속해 온 동명의 프로젝트의 일환으로, 역사, 지나간 시간과 공간을 담아내는 상징적 의미로서의 공원을 탐구한다. 작가는 이 프로젝트를 통해 공원을 “집단 지성의 플랫폼, 새로운 연대 구성의 공간”으로 보고, 단순한 공공의 장소를 넘어 시대정신을 반영하는 추상적인 개념의 장소로 제안한다.

“프로젝트 <프라미스 파크>는 역사와 시간, 장소의 의미와 기억을 담아내는 상징과 개념의 공원을 제안했다. 리서치 과정에서 공원터가 품고 있었던, 하지만 우리가 알지 못했던 기억을 소환했다. 이곳에 모인 사람들은 그 장소가 주는 교훈을 생각했다. 그동안 우리가 지향해왔던 세상에 의문을 제기하며 새로운 플랫폼으로서 공원의 의미를 다시 정의했다. 인류가 만들어낸 문명, 제도, 권력, 그것이 상실케 한 우리의 인식, 실패한 역사 이후 남겨진 것에 대한 연구이자, 상생 가능성의 모색이다.” - 문경원

광주비엔날레에서 선보이는 <프라미스 파크 인 광주>는 세대를 아우르는 사회적 소통, 공동체의 공감과 연대를 위한 하나의 플랫폼이다. 이 작품에서 ‘공원’은 과거 격동의 역사와 지역의 산업화 그리고 현재 국제적인 행사의 장이 되기까지 그 시간을 몸소 체험한 증인이다. 작가는 과거 광주의 지도를 참고하여 변화하는 도시 풍경의 흔적을 비가시적 패턴으로 승화시켜 카펫이라는 매체를 통해 그 서사를 직조했다. 이 과정에서 작가는 인지 과학자, 건축가, 지역문화연구자, 점성술 학자 등 수많은 업계의 전문가와 협업하며 도시계획적, 사회적, 인식적 탐구를 이어간다.

문경원은 <프라미스 파크 인 광주>에서 과거의 시간과 공간 그 안에서 일어난 일련의 사건들과 이에 대한 기억을 시작으로, 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화한 한 공간의 역할과 상징성에 대해 탐구한다. 즉, 과거에 머무르고 이를 되돌아보는 데 그치는 것이 아니라 이를 토대로 현재, 나아가서는 미래에 ‘공원’이라는 공공장소가 가지는 변형된 의미에 초첨을 둔다.
