For the past few years, I have connected the past, present and future of the Korean queer community through a language of visual arts. The Korean media has completely neglected or ridiculed the life of queer. Nevertheless, we can find some traces of the queer life even from such distorted information. I desire to build and share the community’s stories that have overcome the corporeal void, absence, and misrepresentation from what had been portrayed as ‘abnormal.’- Kang Seung Lee

Kang Seung Lee’s new project is introduced in the “Bodies in Desire, Beyond the Disciplinary Fold” section of the 13th Gwangju Biennale Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning. Kang Seung Lee is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in South Korea and now lives and works in Los Angeles. Lee’s work places emphasis on marginalized individual experiences and personal histories challenging singular mainstream history/knowledge, which is often narrow, biased and first-world oriented. Lee often collaborates with artists and activists from diverse communities by organizing projects that reflect values of participation, education and shared experience of art. Lee will be participating in the 2021 New Museum Triennale Soft Water Hard Stone, and his first solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai in November.

Walking along the dripping veils that lead to enter the 3rd gallery, viewers can encounter familiar and yet unexpected space, which resembles a library. Kang Seung Lee displays a collection of the Korea Queer Archive (also known as QueerArch) and his graphite drawings primarily realized in labor-intensive manner to share the stories and traces of the historically marginalized queer as well as of various historical events, such as the AIDS epidemic. Furthermore, he makes records of a connection among numerous lives in the history of oppression and resistance and includes such stories of the queer as a part of the conversation in world history.

Kang Seung Lee delicately depicted a pioneering member of ‘Chingoosai (Between friends)’ and civil rights activist Joon-soo Oh, a renown British artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman, William Dorsey Swann, a man born a slave in the American South who is presumed to be the first American drag queen, Seok-cheon Hong, a Korean actor who had to live through social prejudice after coming out, and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician in California. By exhibiting these drawings as parallels, the artist discovers a link between invisible life and memories of the queer. In addition, he shows a diary of an anonymous transgender person and utilized scanned title pages of approximately 1,700 pieces of queer-related books, magazines, theses, collected over 20 years by QueerArch* to reprint these images as wallpapers and books. An archivist Ruin at QueerArch selected the archive material and Smallstudiosemi designed the display system for this exhibition, formed as a library that houses marginalized community’s memories. 

*QueerArch (also known as the Korea Queer Archive) was established in 2002 with a collection donated by BUDDY. It remains the only public archive focused on queer history and culture in the country. Currently located in Mangwon-dong, Seoul, its collection includes thousands of publications/documents, over 700 films from the Seoul Queer Film Festival and hundreds of mementos. In 2019, Kang Seung Lee co-organized an exhibition titled QueerArch at Hapjungjigu that consisted of newly commissioned works by young queer Korean artists that were created after their months-long research at the archive. QueerArch was a winner of apexart New York international open call exhibitions.

지난 몇 년간 나는 한국 퀴어 커뮤니티의 과거, 현재 그리고 미래를 시각예술의 언어로 연결했다. 한국의 미디어는 퀴어의 삶을 철저히 무시하거나 웃음거리로 삼아왔다. 하지만 우리는 그 잘못된 정보에서도 퀴어의 삶과 흔적을 찾을 수 있다. 소위 ‘비정상적인’ 삶의 묘사에서 신체의 공백, 부재, 오해를 넘어선 공동체의 이야기를 만들어 공유하려 한다. - 이강승 

제13회 광주비엔날레 〈떠오르는 마음, 맞이하는 영혼〉의 ‘욕망 어린 신체, 분과적 경계 너머’ 섹션에는 이강승의 신작 프로젝트가 소개된다. 이강승은 서울에서 태어나 현재 미국 로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 활동하는 예술가이다. 그는 백인, 남성, 이성애 중심으로 서술된 주류 역사에 도전하고, 그 역사 속에서 배제된 소수의 서사를 가시화하는 작업을 전개해오고 있다. 작가는 다양한 인종, 성적 지향, 출신 등을 가진 동료 예술인을 협업자로 초대하고, 이들은 협업 작업을 통해 하나의 학습 기회를 갖게 된다. 때문에 이강승이 작품을 제작하는 과정과 도출된 결과물은 참여와 교육, 공유의 가치가 반영된 큐레이팅 프로젝트의 일환으로서 남다른 의미를 지닌다. 이강승은 올해 뉴뮤지엄트리엔날레 ‘Soft Water Hard Stone’에 참여하며, 11월 갤러리현대에서 개인전을 개최한다. 

비엔날레 3전시실을 구획한 베일을 따라 그의 전시 공간으로 들어가면 익숙한듯 낯선 미지의 도서관과 같은 모습이 나타난다. 이강승은 작가 특유의 노동 집약적이며 서정적인 드로잉 작품과 한국퀴어아카이브*(퀴어락)의 소장품을 한 자리에 모아, 주류의 역사 속에서 소외된 퀴어의 흔적과 이야기, HIV/AIDS의 역사를 관람객과 공유한다. 나아가 한국의 퀴어 역사가 세계사의 일부이며, 억압 그리고 이에 대한 저항의 역사가 만들어낸 수많은 삶들이 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다는 사실을 기록한다. 
 
이강승은 한국의 게이 인권 운동 단체인 ‘친구사이’의 창립 멤버이자 인권 운동가로 활동한 오준수, 영국의 예술가 데릭 저먼(Derek Jarman), 미국 최초의 드랙퀸으로 추정되는 윌리엄 도지 스완(William Dorsey Swann), 한국에서 커밍아웃 후 사회적 시련을 겪었던 배우 홍석천, 캘리포니아 최초의 오픈리 게이 정치인이었던 하비 밀크 등의 모습과 관련 이미지를 전유해 섬세하게 드로잉으로 옮겼다. 전시장에 이 작품들을 병치해 그들의 모습을 나란히 바라보기를 제안함으로써, 퀴어들의 비가시적인 삶과 기억의 연결고리를 찾는다. 이밖에 한 트랜스젠더의 일기장, 퀴어락이 20여 년에 걸쳐 소장한 1,700여 점의 퀴어 관련 서적, 잡지, 논문 등의 표지를 스캔하고, 이 이미지를 벽지와 논문 형식의 책으로 제작했다. 한 공동체의 기억이 담긴 도서관으로 구성된 이번 전시의 아카이브 셀렉션은 퀴어락의 아키비스트 루인이 맡았고, 아카이브가 전시되는 가구는 소목장세미가 디자인했다. 

*한국퀴어아카이브(퀴어락)은 『버디』의 컬렉션 기증을 통해 2002년 설립되었다. 퀴어 역사와 문화를 중심으로 구성된 공공 아카이브로는 국내 유일하다. 현재 서울 망원동 지역에 위치하며, 수천 점의 출판물/문서, 서울 퀴어 영화제의 700편 이상의 영화, 수백 점의 소장품을 보유하고 있다. 이강승은 2019년 한국의 20~30대 퀴어 작가를 초대해 퀴어락의 아카이브를 조사 및 연구하고, 동시대 미술의 맥락에서 한국 퀴어사의 계보를 재해석하는 전시 《퀴어락》(합정지구)을 공동 기획한 바 있다. 뉴욕 apexart 국제 공모를 통해 선정된 전시였다.
