The thirteenth edition of Gwangju Biennale, Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning sets out to examine the spectrum of the extended mind through artistic and theoretical means. Co-directed by Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala, the 13th Gwangju Biennale (1 April–9 May 2021), the exhibition held in Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall is divided into five themes, and Kwak Duk-Jun’s works can be found in the fourth exhibition room, under the title of Matter of Mutation. Kwak’s six paintings of the 1960s including Smile of the Hypocrite 667 and Raccoon Took a Wrong Turn are exhibited. These works are a visualization of Kwak's abstract painting of a complex dimension of trauma and disease, which Kwak has produced for only five years from 1964 to 1969.
"Kwak Duck-Jun was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1937 after his family left Korea during the Japanese occupation. As a consequence of the San Francisco Peace Treaty following World War II, he was stripped of his Japanese nationality and left with immigrant status, unable to identify as either Japanese or Korean. Kwak suffered serious tuberculosis at the age of 23, and the realm of suffering and recovery became part of his imaginative spirit, inward journeys, and subversive conceptualism.
Well known for his experimental performance and video worksfrom the 1970s, his painting series are largely under-recognizedand reflect Kwak’s early struggles and frustrations during hishospitalizations. Each painting on display was made between 1964 and 1969 through a special technique for creating ceramic-liketextures. Kwak colored, coated with wood glue, and scraped with anail the thick, rugged surface of plaster and shell powder on woodpanels to produce spontaneous drawings of liberated curves andorganic forms. Unconcerned with western techniques or paintingon canvas, the paintings’ use of shell powder and the ceramic-likesurfaces of the works evoke his education in Japanese painting.
In Smile of the Hypocrite 667 (1967) and Journey series (1967),the freely flowing curves of the spontaneously drawn lines onthe glazed surface and the numerous ferocious eyes among theshapes recall shamanistic spells or pictographs. At a distance, theorganic forms of the paintings often read as a jumble of eccentricimages, only to cohere into a face or human body. Masked faces, multiple eyes, and maze-like patterns haunt the panels. These symbols derive from his spiritual willpower to overcome physicaltrauma, dilemmas of identity, and discrimination, evincing asardonic wit and palimpsestic vision in Kwak’s approach."

In terms of techniques, Kwak puts completely ingenious ideas into practice. On top of plywood, he created a thick layer of ruggedness using plaster and shell powder and coated it with colors and resin. He then repeated the act of engraving with nails as if it were a cave painting, thus allowing a sturdy texture. Masahiro Yasugi, research director at the National Museum of Art, Osaka has discussed that “Kwak’s desire to express was so strong that his practice could never be limited to a mere act of putting paints on a canvas. He felt an unbearable emotion towards the society and anger at an irrational reality; these sentiments intensified into a rabid act of creation, and his painting was a result of his own fight” in Kwak’s solo exhibition held in 2018 at Gallery Hyundai.
