Seulgi Lee has won the Korea Artist Prize 2020, held at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA).

Seulgi Lee, who was selected as the four finalists of Artist of the Year 2020, presented her work DONG DONG DARI GORI project at the exhibition. The project was inspired by traditional Korean doors and folk song. The project originated from the artist’s imagination that Korean traditional houses must have been transformed into magical spaces when the light of the moon passed through traditional paper of the doors, casting elaborate patterns from the wooden frames of doors and windows. Four of the big and vivid doors, implied the revolution of the moon and the rhythm of the folk song, invite the viewers to the exhibition space. The doors are completed with the collaboration of traditional dancheong crafts techniques. A hint of playfulness is also added through the melodies of the Korean folk song, "Dari Segi (Counting Legs)," filling the space and the display of the traditional French game "Bagatelle." Hanging in the space are glass containers holding water from different rivers around the world, sent by the artist’s friends who are saddened by their inability to meet due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The judges of the Korea Artist Prize 2020 have commented that the artist has well reinterpreted tradition in a modern and playful way with her sophisticated yet unique place-specific installation, and revealing metaphors for establishing relationships under COVID-19 in a delicate way. The exhibit of four artists, including Lee, will run until April 4 in MMCA Seoul.

이슬기 작가가 국립현대미술관 ‘올해의 작가상 2020’을 수상했다. 파이널리스트 4인에 선정된 이슬기는 《올해의 작가상 2020》전에서 공간 설치 작품 <동동다리거리>를 선보였다. 이 프로젝트는 달이 창호지를 바른 한국의 전통 가옥의 문살을 통과하여 방에 마술적 공간을 만든다는 상상에서 출발했다. 달의 회전과 민요의 장단을 문살 구조에 반영한 컬러풀한 거대한 네 개의 문이 관객을 맞는다. 이 문은 작가와 단청 장인이 협업해 전통 기법으로 완성했다. 전시장에는 유희적 요소가 공존한다. 한국의 ‘다리 세기’ 민요가 일정한 격으로 전시장에 흘러 나오고, 관객은 프랑스의 전통 놀이 ‘바가텔’을 직접 편하게 즐길 수 있다. 전시장 벽면에는 세계 각지의 강물을 담은 유리 용기가 가지런히 걸려있다. 팬데믹 이후 만날 수 없게 된 작가의 지인들이 보내온 것이다. ‘올해의 작가상 2020’ 심사위원단은 이슬기 작가가 세련되면서도 독특한 장소특정적 설치로 전통을 현대적이면서도 유희적으로 재해석했으며, 코로나 시대의 관계 맺기에 대한 은유를 섬세한 방식으로 드러냈다고 호평했다. 《올해의 작가상 2020》전은 4월 4일까지 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 열린다.
