Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho (Moon and Jeon) is selected as the artist of MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021. Artworks by Moon and Jeon derive from the fundamental question on the role of art in society in the rapidly changing, unpredictable human lives, facing sociocultural issues such as historical tragedies, contradictions of capitalism, and climate change. The two artists have worked as a duo since 2009, and they have particularly received much domestic and international attention with a long-term project NEWS FROM NOWHERE, initiated in 2012. This representative work premiered at Kassel Documenta 13 in 2012, and during the same year won the Korea Artist Prize 2012 at MMCA. This piece was also exhibited at the Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2013); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2015); and their solo show at Tate Liverpool, UK (2018) marked a notable significance in the art world.
Through MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021, Moon and Jeon plans to present a new episode of NEWS FROM NOWHERE : Freedom Village. Taking place in the setting of Daesong-dong, also known as the “Freedom Village” in the fortified DMZ area, this piece creates a gallery that interacts with video and its environment through a computer program, presents two-channel video installations, archives, and paintings. Through this new piece in diverse media, Moon and Jeon aims to question the role of art in human life after the era of natural disasters. MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021 will be held from September 3, 2021 (Fri) until February 20, 2022 (Sun) at MMCA, Seoul.
문경원 & 전준호 듀오가 《MMCA 현대차 시리즈 2021》의 작가로 선정되었다. 2009년부터 듀오로 활동 중인 문경원 & 전준호는 작품을 통해 인간의 급변하는 삶에서 ‘예술의 역할은 무엇인가’라는 근원적인 물음을 던져 왔다. 이들의 작품에는 역사적 비극, 자본주의의 모순, 기후 변화와 같은 문제적 이슈가 담겨 있다.
두 작가는 2012년부터 진행해 온 장기 프로젝트 <미지에서 온 소식>(2012~)으로 국내외에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 2012년 제13회 카셀 도쿠멘타에 출품되었고, 같은 해 국립현대미술관 《올해의 작가상 2012》에도 출품되어 최종 수상작가로 선정되었다. 2013년 시카고 예술대학 설리반갤러리, 2015년 취리히의 미그로스현대미술관과 2018년 테이트리버풀 개인전에서도 전시되며 전세계 미술계에 강렬한 인상을 각인시켰다.
문경원 & 전준호는 《MMCA 현대차 시리즈 2021》을 위해 <미지에서 온 소식 : 자유의 마을>이라는 신작을 준비 중이다. 2012년부터 진행해 온 장기 프로젝트 <미지에서 온 소식>(2012~)의 연장선에 있는 작품으로, 비무장지대(DMZ)의 대성동 ‘자유의 마을’을 배경이다. 오는 9월, 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 열릴 전시는 다채널 영상, 아카이브, 회화, 컴퓨터 프로그램으로 조절되는 전시 환경 등 다양한 매체의 작품으로 구성될 예정이다.
