It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Kim Tschang-Yeul who passed away on the 5th of January.
Kim Tschang-Yeul, a master of Korean abstract art, has explored the essence of painting via his glistening water drops and use of the text from the Chinese Thousand Character Classic delicately embedding his works with an Eastern philosophy and spirit.
Kim Tschang-Yeul was born in Maengsan-gun, Pyeongannam-do in 1929 and studied at the College of Fine Art, Seoul National University. Turning his attention to the international art world, he submitted his work to the 2nd Paris Biennale in 1961 and the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1965. In 1969, he participated in the Avant-Garde Festival in Paris. The water drop motif was first shown during the presentation of his seminal work “Event of Night” at the Salon de Mai in 1972. For the next fifty years, he has continued to present works featuring water drops. In 2004, Kim held a retrospective spanning thirty years at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume.
The relationship between the gallery and the artist began in 1976 when Gallery Hyundai held Kim’s first solo show in Korea. At the time, he was actively developing his career in Paris. The initial show introduced Kim’s water drop paintings, already acclaimed in Paris, to the domestic audience for the first time. The reception caused a sensation that permeated the Korean art world significantly enhancing his recognition and stature in Korea. From that time, Gallery Hyundai has continued to work closely with the artists via solo exhibitions and support at the institutional level. In 2020, the gallery presented the artist's final exhibition, "The Path." “The Path” suggested the morale, that mankind should strive for, by combining text carrying the profound and dignified worldview of truth and the water drops symbolizing life, purity, and catharsis.

김창열(1929-2021) 화백이 지난 1월 5일 향년 92세로 별세했다. 김창열은 영롱하게 빛나는 물방울과 동양의 철학과 정신을 상징하는 천자문을 캔버스에 섬세하게 쓰고 그리며, 회화의 본질을 독창적으로 사유한 한국 현대미술의 거장이다.
작가는 1929년 평안남도 맹산에서 태어나 서울대에 진학해 미술을 공부했다. 1961년 제2회 파리비엔날레, 1965년 상파울루 비엔날레에 참여하며 국제무대에 작품을 알렸다. 백남준의 도움으로 1969년 《제7회 아방가르드 페스티벌》에 참가한 그는 미국 생활을 청산하고, 좀 더 다양한 미술 경향이 공존하는 파리로 돌아갔다. 1972년 프랑스 파리에서 열린 살롱전 《살롱 드 메》에서 처음으로 ‘물방울 회화’ <밤의 행사(Event of Night)>(1972)를 공개한다. 김창열은 이후 50년 넘게 물방울이라는 소재에 천착하여 자신만의 독특한 물방울 회화를 창조했다. 2004년 쥬드폼므미술관에서 그의 작품 세계를 조망한 대형 회고전이 개최되기도 했다.
갤러리현대는 1976년 프랑스 파리에서 활약 중인 김창열의 개인전을 개최하며 처음 인연을 맺었다. 전시를 계기로 파리에서 호평을 받은 그의 ‘물방울 회화’ 작업이 국내에 처음 소개됐고, 미술계 안팎으로 신선한 반향을 일으키며 작가의 인지도도 크게 올랐다. 이후 갤러리현대는 그의 개인전을 꾸준히 개최했으며, 2020년 작가의 생전 마지막 전시인 《The Path(더 패스)》를 선보였다. 전시를 통해 평생 물방울을 그리고 문자를 쓰는 수행과 같은 창작을 이어간 김창열이 도달한 ‘진리 추구’의 삶과 태도를 알렸다.
