Published on the occasion of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s solo exhibition The Path at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul. The Path concentrates on the subject of ‘text,’ which, along with water drops, creates a grand vein of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s artistic oeuvre. In spite of the scarcity in accumulated research, the text reveals as strong presence as the water drops and serves as a critical element in the artist’s paintings. Initiated with Le Figaro painted in 1975, the artist attempted to merge water drops that symbolize life, purity, and catharsis and text that symbolizes reason, duty, and civilization.
The exhibition catalogue contains 38 paintings that show the combination of the water drops and texts, mainly focusing on the Recurrence series and three essays by Shin Jeong Keun, Professor at Sungkyunkwan University, Hey-Kyung Ki, Director of Busan Museum of Art, and Junichi Shioda, Professor at Tama Art University. Shin Jeong Keun, in his writings, approaches Kim Tschang-Yeul's oeuvre through an Eastern philosophy and offered a new perspective on understanding his painting. Hey-Kyung Ki not only explores the meaning of the texts in Kim’s work but also claims that Kim and Dansaekhwa painters form the same trend in that they share a process of vacating themselves. Junichi Shioda's essay has been re-translated from the original writing for Kim’s solo exhibition held at Sakamoto Zenzo Museum in Japan, 1998. Shioda described the meaning of Chinese characters in the Eastern culture, associating with Kim's works. Through the catalogue, the readers will be able to take a step closer to the truth beyond the text that Kim Tachang-Yeul pursued in his work.

김창열 개인전 《The Path》의 도록이 발간되었다. 이번 전시는 그의 작품 세계에서 물방울과 함께 거대한 맥을 형성하는 ‘문자’에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그간 문자는 전시나 연구의 주제로 잘 다뤄지지 않았으나, 물방울만큼 강한 존재감을 드러낼 뿐 아니라 김창열 회화의 핵심적 요소이다. 1975년 <휘가로지>를 시작으로 김창열은 작품 속에서 생명과 순수, 정화를 상징하는 물방울과 이치와 도리, 문명을 상징하는 문자의 합일을 시도하였다.
전시 도록에는 <회귀> 연작을 중심으로 이러한 문자와 물방울의 결합을 잘 보여주는 작품 38점의 도판과 성균관대학교 유학대학 신정근 학장, 부산시립미술관 기혜경 관장, 일본 타마미술대학교 주니치 쇼다 교수의 에세이가 수록되었다. 신정근은 동양 철학적 관점을 통해 김창열의 작품 세계에 접근하여 그의 화업을 이해하는 새로운 시각을 제시한다. 기혜경은 김창열의 작품 속 문자가 갖고 있는 의미에 대해 탐구할 뿐 아니라, 자신을 비워내는 작업 방식을 공유한다는 점에서 ‘단색화’ 작가들의 과정과 김창열이 같은 흐름을 형성한다고 분석한다. 주니치 쇼다의 에세이는 1998년 일본 사카모토젠조미술관에서 열렸던 김창열 개인전을 위해 썼던 글이 새로이 번역된 것이다. 당시 <회귀> 연작을 집중적으로 조명했던 이 전시를 위해 그는 동양문화권에서 한문과 천자문이 가지는 의미와 김창열의 작품 세계를 연결해 서술하였다. 독자는 도록을 통해 김창열 화백이 작품 속에서 추구하고자 했던 문자 너머의 진리에 한발짝 더 다가설 수 있을 것이다.
