Myoung Ho Lee’s Tree series is presented in Among the Trees at Hayward Gallery in London.

Organized by Ralph Rugoff, the director of Hayward Gallery, this exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The show was open to the public in March, but it was temporarily suspended due to the aftermath of COVID before reopening on Aug 1st.

Alongside sculptures, installations, drawings, paintings and photographs, there are artworks of 37 artists that celebrate the soaring scale of trees. By turns poetic, adventurous and thought-provoking, this group exhibition explores our relationship with trees and forests. Among the Trees transports us around the world – from Colombian rainforests and remote Japanese islands to olive orchards in Israel and a 9,550-year-old spruce in Sweden.

Tree series is the most widely known of Myoung Ho Lee's photograph works. The artist displays the tree as a painted object on canvas by creating a large white canvas behind the tree to separate it from nature. The tree is flattened into two-dimensional image and is reborn as an art. The tree in Tree… #2 featured at Among the Trees was photographed in Mongolia. Lee has turned the tree, standing alone on a faraway grassland 3,200 kilometers northwest of Ulaanbaatar, into an object worthy of notice.

이명호의 <Tree> 시리즈를 런던 헤이워드 갤러리에서 열리는 기획전 《Among the Trees》에서 만날 수 있다.

헤이워드 갤러리의 관장 랄프 루고프가 직접 기획한 전시로, 올해 50주년을 맞은 ‘지구의 날’을 기념하여 마련되었다. 올 초에 일반 공개되었으나 코로나 바이러스의 여파로 잠정 중단되었다가 지난 8월 1일 다시 대중에 문을 열었다. 

《Among the Trees》전은 세계적 작가 37명의 조각, 설치, 비디오, 드로잉, 회화, 사진 등을 대거 선보인다. 이들의 시적이고, 실험적이며, 함축적인 작품은 나무라는 놀라운 유기체에 관한 우리의 감상을 생동감 넘치도록 확장하며, 자연을 새로운 시선으로 다시 볼 수 있도록 유도한다. 콜롬비아의 열대우림부터 일본의 섬, 이스라엘의 올리브밭과 스웨덴에 있는 9550년 된 가문비나무까지, 전시는 우리를 세계 곳곳의 장소로 데려다 놓는다. 

<Tree> 연작은 이명호의 사진 작품 중 가장 널리 알려져 있다. 이 연작은 나무 뒤에 하얀색 캔버스가 세워진다. 캔버스 때문에 나무라는 대상은 본래의 자연 풍경에서 분리된다. 나무는 캔버스에 그려진 것처럼 이차원적 이미지로 평면화되며, 예술의 대상으로 거듭난다. 《Among the Trees》전에 출품된 <Tree… #2>는 몽골에서 촬영했다. 작가는 울란바토르에서 서북쪽으로 3,200km 떨어진 초원에 홀로 서 있는 이 나무를 주목할 만한 존재로 전환했다.
