By suggesting the images of pipes or bands, Lee Seung Jio (1941-1990)’s Nucleus series presents his constructed world of geometric abstract art. The retrospective exhibition of the artist, Lee Seung Jio: Advancing Columns (curated by Danji Lee) is now open at the MMCA Gwacheon. The exhibition showcases 90 works that were born in his relation to the time he faced, and presents archives related to Origin and AG, both radical art groups that he participated in as a founding member. The exhibition presented in Gallery 1 and the Main Hall of the museum consists of five themes articulated by the artist for his oeuvre: The Birth of Color Bands, The Construction of Flatness and Motives, Silent Swaying, The Variation of Yin and Yang and Toward the Infinite.

‘파이프’나 '밴드' 형태를 연상시키는 ‘핵(Nucleus)’ 연작을 통해 엄격한 기하학적 추상의 세계를 추구한 이승조(1941-1990). 그의 작품 세계를 재조명하는 회고전 《이승조: 도열하는 기둥》(이단지 기획)이 국립현대미술관 과천에서 열렸다. 작가 작고 30주기를 기념하는 이 전시에는 대표작 90여 점을 비롯해, 작가가 창립 동인으로 활약한 전위 미술 그룹 오리진과 한국아방가르드협회의 아카이브를 함께 소개한다. 전시는 작가가 이룩한 조형적 주제들에 따라 '색 띠의 탄생', '평면과 모티프의 구축', '고요한 일렁임', '음과 양의 변주', '무한을 향하여' 등 5개의 섹션으로 구성되었다. 그리고 1980년대 이후 제작된 대작들을 중앙홀에서 소개한다.
