Kang Seung Lee is participating in No Space, Just A Place: Eterotopia (curated by Myriam Ben Salah) currently on view at Daelim Museum in Seoul. Commissioned by Gucci International, Lee’s new works, Covers (QueerArch) and Untitled (Diary), explore diverse histories of the Korean queer community during the past few decades.

Centering on QueerArch*’s archival collection, Lee’s project in the exhibition presents a large-scale wall installation along with a graphite drawing. The immersive wallpaper installation Covers (QueerArch) blankets the entire wall spaces of Daelim Museum’s staircase with approximately 1,700 covers of books and magazines that were scanned from QueerArch’s collection, commemorating the invisible memories of queer lives in Korea that have been sustained and preserved by the care of many generations of queer activists and artists. Lee also utilizes the museum space to challenge the narrow and biased perspectives in Korean (art) history and to resist the discursive violence that has resulted in the historical erasure of queer people in Korea.

Placed upon Covers (QueerArch), the drawing Untitled (Diary) houses the story of a transgender woman. The artist has meticulously reproduced the appearance of a ripped and worn diary using charcoal.  This diary of a transgender woman was donated to the office of Korea's first homosexual magazine Buddy which also housed the QueerArch archives. It brims with the pains and sorrows of a life as a transgender woman in Korea. Untitled (Diary) is an ode dedicated to those who weathered the oppression and discrimination, hatred and criticism in Korean society targeted at LGBTQ+ people, as much as it is yet another "cover" of a newly written history through the artist's own body. The exhibition runs through July 12th.

*QueerArch (also known as the Korea Queer Archive) was established in 2002 with a collection donated by BUDDY. It remains the only public archive focused on queer history and culture in the country. Currently located in Mangwon-dong, Seoul, its collection includes thousands of publications/documents, over 700 films from the Seoul Queer Film Festival and hundreds of mementos. In 2019, Kang Seung Lee co-organized an exhibition titled QueerArch at Hapjungjigu that consisted of newly commissioned works by young queer Korean artists that were created after their months-long research at the archive. QueerArch was a winner of apexart New York international open call exhibitions.

‘우리는 한국 퀴어 공동체의 역사를 어떻게 기억할 수 있을까?’ 구찌가 서울에서 선보이는 프로젝트 전시 《이 공간, 그 장소: 헤테로토피아》(미리암 벤살라 기획)에 출품된 이강승의 <Covers(QueerArch)>과 <Untitled(Dairy)>는 한국 퀴어 공동체의 역사를 다층적으로 탐색한다.

<표지들(퀴어락)>이라는 제목처럼, 작가는 퀴어락(한국 퀴어 아카이브)*이 20여 년에 걸쳐 소장한 1,700여 점의 퀴어 관련 서적, 잡지, 논문 등의 표지를 스캔하고, 이 이미지를 전시장을 향하는 계단 전체의 벽면과 전시장 벽면을 감싸듯 설치했다. 모든 관객은 전시장으로 진입하기 위해 이 흑백의 낯선 표지들에 의도치 않게 둘러 싸이게 되고, 한국 퀴어 공동체의 시각적 기억과 다양한 이야기를 하나씩 마주하게 된다. 이강승은 이 작품을 통해 대중적으로 인기가 높은 미술관 내부를 퀴어링(queering)하고, 한국 퀴어 공동체의 역사, 그 담론의 흐름, 퀴어 아카이브에 대안적 관점을 제안한다.

<Covers(QueerArch)> 위에 놓인 드로잉 작품 <Untitled(Dairy)>는 한 트랜스 젠더 여성의 이야기를 담고 있다. 작가는 표지가 찢기고 매우 낡은 일기장을 흑연을 사용해 정성껏 매우 세밀하게 재현했다. 이 일기는 한 트랜스 젠더 여성이 한국 최초의 동성애 전문 잡지 『버디』의 사무실을 방문해 기증한 것으로, 퀴어락의 아카이브 소장품이다. 일기 속에는 한국에서 트렌스 젠더 여성으로서 겪은 삶의 애환이 절절하게 녹아 있다. <Untitled(Dairy)>는 LGBTQ를 향한 한국 사회의 억압과 차별, 혐오와 비난을 견뎌낸 이들을 기리는 헌사이자, 작가의 몸을 통해 새롭게 그려져 역사의 기록으로 남게 된 또 다른 ‘표지’라 할 수 있다. 전시는 7월 12일까지, 대림미술관에서.

*퀴어락(한국 퀴어 아카이브)은 『버디』의 컬렉션 기증을 통해 2002년 설립되었다. 퀴어 역사와 문화를 중심으로 구성된 공공 아카이브로는 국내 유일하다. 현재 서울 망원동 지역에 위치하며, 수천 점의 출판물/문서, 서울 퀴어 영화제의 700편 이상의 영화, 수백 점의 소장품을 보유하고 있다. 이강승은 2019년 한국의 20~30대 퀴어 작가를 초대해 퀴어락의 아카이브를 조사 및 연구하고, 동시대 미술의 맥락에서 한국 퀴어사의 계보를 재해석하는 전시 《퀴어락》(합정지구)을 공동 기획한 바 있다. 뉴욕 apexart 국제 공모를 통해 선정된 전시였다.
