Choe U-Ram’s Custos Cavum (2011) is presented at HYUNDAI Motors art project “HYUNDAI x ELEKTRA: METAMORPHOSIS.” This project questions the relationship between human, nature and mechanics in the era of uncertainty following the global pandemic. Choe’s work is a representation of guardians that keep small holes between two different worlds safe. Custos Cavum, moving and breathing mechanically and meticulously, reflects the mythological world as the artist has imagined.
Once upon a time, there were two worlds.
They were connected to each other through a number of small holes, as if the worlds were breathing through these holes. However, the holes had a tendency to close up, so there were guardians next to each one to keep them open.
The guardians were called Custos Cavum. They took the form of seals and had large front teeth, which they used to gnaw the holes to prevent them from closing up. Whenever the Custos Cavum felt the generation of a new hole somewhere, it fell into a deep sleep. From the body of the quietly sleeping Custos Cavum grew winged spores called Unicus. These spores took flight and each flew to a new hole, where it gave rise to a new Custos Cavum.
As time went on, the people of each world gradually forgot about the other. The guardians lost their power and died, one after another.
When the last Custos Cavum died, the last hole closed, separating the two worlds completely. The existence of the other world was entirely erased from people’s memories.
Last night, I saw Unicuses start to grow from the last bone of a Custos Cavum in my small garden. According to an old story, Unicuses will grow whenever the holes to the other world are open again.

최우람 작가의 2011년작 <쿠스토스 카붐>이 《현대 × 일렉트라: 메타모포시스》(현대 모터스튜디오 서울)전에 출품되었다. 이 전시 프로젝트는 팬데믹 이후 닥친 불확실성 시대에 “인간, 자연, 기계 사이의 관계”를 다시 질문한다. <쿠스토스 카붐>은 두 세계를 연결하는 작은 구멍의 수호자를 형상화한 작품이다. 매우 정교하게 설계된 기계 장치가 살아 숨쉬듯 움직이는 이 작품에는 작가가 상상한 신화적 세계가 반영되어 있다.
아주 오래 전 두 개의 세계가 있었다.
두 세계는 작은 구멍들로 서로 연결되어 있었고, 마치 숨쉬는 것처럼 서로 통할 수 있었다.
그런데, 그 구멍들은 자꾸만 닫히려는 성질이 있어서, 각각의 구멍 옆에는 늘 구멍을 지키는 수호자가 하나씩 있었다. 쿠스토스 카붐(Custos Cavum)이라 불리던 이 수호자는 바다사자와 같은 형상을 하고 있었는데, 늘 구멍이 막히지 않도록 커다란 앞니로 구멍을 갉아 구멍을 유지하였다.
쿠스토스 카붐들이 어딘가 새로운 구멍이 생겨나는 것을 느끼게 되면 깊은 잠에 들어가고, 죽은 듯 자고 있는 그 들의 몸통에서는 유니쿠스(Unicus)라 불리는 날개 달린 홀씨들이 자라 났다.
이 유니쿠스들은 쿠스토스 카붐의 몸통에서 떨어져 다른 구멍으로 날아가 새로운 쿠스토스 카붐으로 자라나 새로 생겨난 구멍을 지켰다.
하지만 어느 날, 다른 세계에 대한 기억이 사람들의 머리에서 점차 사라지면서 쿠스토스 카붐들은 힘을 잃어갔고 하나씩 하나씩 죽어갔다.
결국 마지막 쿠스토스 카붐마저 죽어가자 마지막 구멍도 닫혀버리고, 두 개의 세계는 완전히 분리되어 사람들의 기억 속에서도 완전히 지워졌다.
어제밤 나의 작은 마당에 마지막 남은 쿠스토스 카붐 뼈에서 유니쿠스들이 자라나기 시작했다.
세상 어딘가에 다른 세상과 통하는 구멍이 다시 열렸을 때 그들이 다시 자라나기 시작한다는 오래된 이야기처럼…최우람
