An exhibition catalogue that accompanied the Lee Jung Seob Retrospective held at Gallery Hyundai in 1972.
The catalogue is comprised of images of exhibited works, information on the collectors of the works, information on individual art works, an essay written by Lee Kyungsung, a former director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA), artist biography and more. The publication is considered an important resource laying the groundwork for further scholarly research on Lee Jung Seob’s practice.
Lee Jung Seob Retrospective was a monumental exhibition that provided an opportunity to reconsider the legacy of the short and tragic life of this genius artist. This exhibition was significant in researching, organizing, collecting and introducing a number of artworks by the artist that had been previously scattered. The exhibition featured approximately 100 pieces spanning his oeuvre including major works in oil color, watercolor, metal foil, drawings, etc. Throngs of people lined to get a chance to view the works of this legendary artist. Appreciative of the national recognition gained through its efforts in hosting the exhibition, Gallery Hyundai acquired and donated Lee’s work, A Couple, to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea.
#50years Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Gallery Hyundai plans to make available online a number of publications from its extensive archives including exhibition catalogues, the historic art magazine Hwarang and other archival materials.

1972년 현대화랑에서 열린 이중섭 유작전의 화집. 전시 출품작 화보, 소장가 정보, 이경성 전 국립현대미술관 관장의 에세이, 개별 작품 설명, 작가 연보 등으로 구성되었다. 오늘날 이중섭 연구의 기틀을 마련한 귀중한 자료로 평가받는다.
이중섭 유작전은 짧고 비극적 생애를 보낸 ‘천재 화가’ 이중섭을 미술사적으로 재평가하는 계기를 마련한 기념비적 전시로 기록된다. 곳곳에 흩어져 행방이 묘하던 이중섭의 주요 작품이 이 전시를 통해 한자리에서 공개되었다. 그의 대표작인 유화, 수채화, 은지화, 데생 등 100여 점이 출품되었다. 40세에 요절한 그의 삶이 녹아든 작품을 보기 위해 관객이 밀려들었다. 이 전시로 전국적 지명도를 얻은 갤러리현대는 국민적 성원에 대한 감사의 마음을 담아, 이중섭의 대표작 <부부>를 구입해 국립현대미술관에 기증하였다.
