Ayoung Kim is participating in HUMORS, on view from April 22 to May 30 at DOOSAN Art Center DOOSAN Gallery. Curated by Seoul-based independent curator Goeun Song, the exhibition explores the new languages and sensibilities that artists have developed in response to the complex and large-scale conditions of the contemporary world, including environmental issues, political polarization, and social inequality. Here, “humor” is proposed not as lighthearted amusement, but as a device and methodology that renders a contradictory world unfamiliar, encouraging new interpretations and ways of imagining alternative possibilities.
Ayoung Kim presents Al-Mather Plot 1991 (2025) in the exhibition. Centered on the Al-Mather Housing Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the work juxtaposes multiple temporalities and narratives, interweaving the oil economy, war, migrant labor, and personal memory. By blending documentary elements, personal narratives, and fictional components, and by combining various media such as video, animation, and generative imagery, the work subverts and reconfigures conventional narrative structures. In doing so, it invites viewers to reconsider familiar histories and realities, and to reflect on a world that resists reduction to a single meaning.
김아영이 두산아트센터 두산갤러리에서 4월 22일부터 5월 30일까지 개최하는 《후모어스(HUMORS)》에 참여한다. 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 독립 큐레이터 송고은이 기획한 이번 전시는, 환경 파괴, 정치적 양극화, 사회적 불평등 등 복잡하고 거대한 동시대의 현실을 마주한 작가들이 형성한 새로운 언어와 감각을 탐색한다. 여기서 ‘유머’는 가벼운 농담이 아니라, 모순적인 세계를 낯설게 인식하게 하고 그 안에서 새로운 해석과 가능성을 상상하도록 이끄는 하나의 장치이자 방법론으로 제시된다.
이번 전시에서 김아영은 〈알 마터 플롯 1991〉 (2025)를 선보인다. 이 작업은 사우디아라비아 리야드의 알 마터 아파트를 중심으로, 석유 경제, 전쟁, 이주 노동, 개인의 기억을 교차시키며 서로 다른 시간과 서사를 병치한다. 다큐멘터리적 사실, 개인적 서사, 가상적 요소를 혼합하고, 영상·애니메이션·생성형 이미지 등 다양한 매체를 결합함으로써 기존의 서사 구조를 비틀고 재구성하는 전복적 감각을 드러낸다. 이는 관객에게 익숙한 역사와 현실을 새롭게 바라보며, 단일한 의미로 환원될 수 없는 세계를 다시 사유하게 한다.
