Ayoung Kim’s Al-Mater Plot 1991 (2025) will be screened on March 26 as part of the Art Basel Hong Kong Film program, curated by Hong Kong–based media artist Ellen Pau. The Film program at Art Basel Hong Kong highlights the experimental and discursive potential of contemporary moving image practices, and this year presents works by a diverse group of artists, primarily based in Asia, exploring themes of technology, history, and social structures.
Al-Mater Plot 1991 unfolds a multilayered narrative centered on the Al-Mater Housing Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where historical and geopolitical conflicts surrounding oil intersect with the artist’s personal memories of her father, who had been dispatched to the Middle East during her childhood. Combining on-site footage, animation, and interviews, the work traces the intersection of individual memory and the flow of global capital, revealing an expanded spatiotemporal framework of modern and contemporary history where personal and historical narratives converge.
Alongside the screening, Kim will participate in an artist talk the same day at the Auditorium of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), co-organized by the Korea Arts Management Service and ArtReview. She will be joined by moderator Mark Rapport (Editor-in-Chief of ArtReview), along with fellow screening participant ikkibawiKrrr, to discuss their respective practices and the expanded possibilities of the moving image today.
In addition, Kim will participate in the LACMA Digital Art Conversations on March 24 at Soho House Hong Kong. Organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Digital Leaders (LDL), the talk brings together experts from various fields to explore the intersections of digital technology and contemporary art, and to consider the future of creative environments. Kim will be in conversation with Sunny Cheung, Curator at M+, discussing the impact of AI on artistic creation as well as her own experiences working with AI.

〈알 마터 플롯 1991〉은 사우디아라비아 리야드의 알 마터 아파트를 중심으로, 석유를 둘러싼 역사적·지정학적 갈등과 어린 시절 중동에 파견되었던 아버지에 대한 개인적 기억이 교차하는 다층적 서사를 펼친다. 현지에서 촬영한 영상과 애니메이션, 인터뷰 등을 결합해 개인의 기억과 글로벌 자본의 흐름이 중첩되는 지점을 섬세하게 추적하며, 개인의 서사와 역사적 서사가 교차하는 근현대사의 확장된 시공간의 세계를 입체적으로 드러낸다.
예술경영지원센터와 아트리뷰(ArtReview)가 공동 주최하여 홍콩컨벤션센터(HKCEC) 오디토리움에서 열리는 스크리닝과 함께 당일 토크가 진행된다. 김아영은 모더레이터 마크 라포트(Mark Rapport)와 함께, 이번 프로그램에 참여한 이끼바위쿠르르(ikkibawiKrrr)와 더불어 각자의 작업 세계와 동시대 영상 매체의 확장 가능성에 대해 논의를 나눌 예정이다.
