Kim Oki 김오키: SAUVE QUI PEUT W Korea

An interview with Kim Oki by editor Jeon Yeoul has been published in W Korea, conducted right before the release of Kim Oki’s full-length album SAUVE QUI PEUT in June 2025. Originating from Gallery Hyundai’s group exhibition SAUVE QUI PEUT, the album extends its inquiry into a musical narrative. It is available on all major streaming platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and Melon.

With eight artists in the exhibition, I responded to each artist’s work one by one. Some felt playful, others carried an intense energy, while some simply lifted my spirits. The real challenge was finding a way to hold all of those different sensibilities together. In the end, I ended up relying more on ambient sound than the saxophone to hold everything together. Rather than gathering abstract sounds into a single point, I wanted them to surround the listener from every direction. Although I've never actually been to Mongolia, I kept imagining myself sitting alone in a desert at night beneath an immense sky filled with stars. That vastness, that feeling of being completely immersed in space, was what I hoped to evoke through the music.

지난 6월, 김오키 뮤지션의 정규 앨범 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라》가 발매되기 직전에 W 매거진의 전여울 에디터가 만나 이야기를 나눈 인터뷰가 공개되었다. 김오키의 이번 앨범은 갤러리현대의 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라》 기획을 음악적 서사로 확장한 프로젝트이다. 음원은 유튜브, 스포티파이, 애플뮤직, 멜론 뮤직 등 모든 음원 플랫폼에서 들을 수 있다.

“전시 참여 작가만 8명이다 보니, 각 작품이 주는 이미지를 하나씩 떠올려야 했다. 어떤 작품은 좀 귀엽고, 어떤 건 강하고, 또 어떤 건 기분을 좋아지게 만들었다. 문제는 이들 사이에 어떻게 통일성을 주느냐였다. 고민 끝에 색소폰 대신 앰비언트 사운드로 그 여백을 채우기로 했다. 추상적인 소리들이 한곳에서 뭉쳐서 들리는 게 아니라, 주변을 감싸듯 들리게 만들고 싶었다. 몽골에 가본 적은 없지만, 밤의 사막에 혼자 앉아 있는데 머리 위로 별이 쏟아지는 듯한 느낌이랄까. 그런 공간감과 감각을 음악으로 만들고 싶었다.”
