Tomás Saraceno(b.1973)’s practice is elevated by the concepts linking art, life science and social sciences. Enmeshed at the junction of these worlds, his floating sculptures, community projects and interactive installations propose and explore new, sustainable ways of inhabiting and sensing the environment. The artist, concerned with climate change and other environmental issues, unfolds his own vision of the attainable utopia, where humans, nonhumans and other organisms can co-inhabit on the Earth. This first solo exhibition presented at Gallery Hyundai offers the viewers practical and multi-layered perspectives in approaching Saraceno’s poetic yet radical art world.
A mysterious cosmic scene unfolds on the first floor. The sculptures that are suspended from the ceiling resonate through delicate and subtle lights, appearing as constellations, shadows of the Moon or bubbles floating in the sky. As viewers wander in this immersive exhibition space, they may realize their own position within the cosmic scale. On the second floor, the viewers encounter the artist’s very collaborator, the spider/web and other related works. The interactions that occur among the viewer-turned participant in the darkness, (cosmic) dust, spider/web, and the air current create an impromptu orchestral harmony. In the basement, lastly, present are the Cloud Cities, a long-standing project in search of an alternative form of urbanism and airborne habitats. The border-free habitat has been realized within the familiar cityscape of Seoul. From spiders to humans, dust to clouds, clouds to cities, light to darkness, and the Earth to the Universe… Saraceno invites the viewers to the world within and outside the planet Earth.
토마스 사라세노(b. 1973)의 예술 실천은 미술, 생명과학, 사회과학을 서로 연결하는 개념에 의해 고양된다. 그가 만든 공중에 매달린 조각, 커뮤니티 프로젝트, 인터랙티브 설치작품은 환경에 거주하고 그것을 감지하는 새롭고 지속 가능한 방법을 제시한다. 사라세노는 오늘의 환경과 기후 문제를 고민하며, 인간과 다양한 생물이 공생하는 미래의 ‘실현 가능한 유토피아’를 작품에 펼쳐 보인다. 갤러리현대와 함께 하는 첫 개인전에는 작가의 시적이며 급진적인 작품 세계에 접근할 수 있는 유용한 경로를 다층적으로 제시한다.
1층 전시장에는 신비로운 우주적 풍경이 등장한다. 전시장에 매달린 아름다운 빛을 발하는 조각품은 우주의 별자리나 달그림자, 하늘을 자유롭게 떠다니는 비눗방울을 떠올린다. 작은 전시장에서 관객은 자신의 장소를 우주적 규모로 인식하게 된다. 2층에서는 작가의 ‘협력자’인 거미/망과 관련된 작품을 선보인다. 어둠 속의 관객, (우주) 먼지 입자, 거미/망, 그리고 기류 사이의 상호작용을 통해 즉흥적인 오케스트라가 연주된다. 지하 전시장에는 새롭고 대안적인 형태의 도시성과 하늘에 떠 있는 주거 형태에 도전하는 작가의 오랜 연구 프로젝트 《클라우드 시티즈》를 경험한다. 작가가 꿈꾸는 미래의 초국가적 거주지가 서울의 익숙한 풍경에 스펙터클한 이미지로 구현됐다. 거미에서 인간으로, 먼지에서 구름으로, 구름에서 도시로, 빛에서 어둠으로, 지구에서 우주로… 토마스 사라세노는 관객을 지구 안과 밖의 놀라운 세계로 초대한다.
