Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Two Great Artists of Korean Painting: Lee Sangbeom · Byeon Gwansik. Lee Sangbeom and Byeon Gwansik are the two monumental figures in the history of modern art in Korea. While succeeding the tradition of Jeong Seon and Kim Hong-do, the master painters in Joseon Dynasty, the two artists firmly established their unique and original styles. Ranging from the very early works to paintings completed in their last years, this momentous exhibition provides an opportunity to appreciate the significant masterpieces of both artists.

The main space has transformed the gallery through the accommodation of around 50 key works by the father of modern Korean art, Cheongjeon Lee Sangbeom(靑田 李象範, 1897-1972), who established the prominent ‘Cheongjeon Style’ of Korean landscape painting. Mt. Seorak (1946) and Forest Covered in Thick Fog – his most recognized painting from the 60s, which was exhibited at the 17th National Art Exhibition – among others, portraying beautiful Korean mountain villages, are on show. Additionally, Returning at Dawn, completed in 1945, is unveiled to the public for the first time in this exhibition. As the pupil of An Jungsik and Cho Seokjin, the most eminent painters of the late Joseon period, Lee excelled in the field of landscape painting. He participated in the production of mural painting at Changdeokgung, a Korean royal palace at a young age and received special awards at the Joseon Art Exhibition. Through his harmonic use of both Eastern and Western painting techniques, Lee mastered his own canon of brushstrokes and ink technique, which resulted in the unique ‘Cheongjeon Style’ of painting. Even after all these years, the works of Lee Sangbeom, which depict mountains and trees; rocks and streams; and farmers and their wives in a distinctive Korean way, allow viewers to experience the calmness and serenity of Korean landscape paintings.

The new space has dedicated the gallery to around 50 of the most celebrated works by Sojeong Byeon Gwansik(小亭 卞寬植, 1899-1976), which illustrate his lifelong voyage through the natures of Korea. Byeon’s renowned pieces portraying the scenic view of Mt. Geumgang such as Bodeokgul Cave in Inner Mt. Geumgang and Jinjudam Pond in Inner Mt. Geumgang as well as Samseonam Hermitage in Outer Mt. Geumgang in Autumn, which was exhibited at Traveling Exhibition of Korean Paintings in 1977, are on show. As the grandson of the famous painter Cho Seokjin, Byeon Gwansik showed remarkable talent in drawing at a young age. He has been recognized as one of the most iconic painters of Korean art in his role as a prize winner, recommended artist, and judge for the most representative exhibitions of his time, including the Joseon Art Exhibition and the National Art Exhibition. Influenced by his grandfather Cho, Byeon practiced a typical ink-based landscape of literati painting in the early stages of his career. However, he began to pursue the depiction of reality in his work, based on the notion of Western ideology, and established his own style of modern landscape painting. His unprecedented composition, natural lines, and charismatic brushstrokes found in his realistic paintings of Korean nature have established Byeon Gwansik as a painter who proposed a new era of Korean art.

We hope that this exhibition will become the foundation for the enrichment and further acknowledgment of Korean art both nationally and internationally.

갤러리현대는 《한국화의 두 거장 – 청전 · 소정》 전시를 개최합니다. 청전과 소정은 겸재, 단원 등 조선시대 대가들의 전통을 계승하면서도 독창적인 화풍을 구축하며 우리나라 근 ∙ 현대미술사의 기념비적인 거장으로 평가받고 있습니다. 두 화백의 초기작부터 말년에 완성된 작품까지 대표적인 작품을 선보이는 이번 전시는 그간 좀처럼 한자리에서 감상하기 어려웠던 두 거장의 작품들을 만나 볼 수 있는 뜻 깊은 자리입니다.

갤러리현대 본관은 독창적인 청전 양식을 구축하여 한국적 산수화를 완성한 근 ∙ 현대 동양화단의 스승인 청전 이상범(靑田 李象範, 1897-1972) 화백의 대표적인 작품 50여 점으로 구성됩니다. 1946년 <설악산>, 제17회 대한민국미술전람회에 출품되었던 60년대 대표작 <고원무림>을 비롯하여 아름다운 한국의 산속 마을을 담아낸 다양한 작품들이 전시됩니다. 또한 이번 전시에서는 1945년 제작된 <효천귀로>가 최초로 공개됩니다. 구한말 최고의 화가였던 심전 안중식과 소림 조석진의 제자인 청전은 산수화 분야에서 발군의 실력을 보였으며, 젊은 나이에 창덕궁 부벽화 제작에 참여하고 조선미술전람회에서 입상과 특선을 연이어 수상하였습니다. 청전은 동서양의 화법을 조화시키고 자신만의 붓질과 묵법을 연마하며 독창적인 청전 양식을 창출하였습니다. 산과 나무, 암석과 개천, 농부와 아낙의 모습을 한국적인 정취로 표현해낸 청전의 작품은 세월이 지난 지금도 우리에게 한국 산수화의 잔잔한 감동과 정취를 느끼도록 합니다.

갤러리현대 신관은 평생을 한국의 산천을 방랑하며 그 정취를 역동적인 화필로 그려낸 소정 변관식(小亭 卞寬植, 1899-1976) 화백의 대표적인 작품 50여 점으로 구성됩니다. 소정의 대표작인 <내금강 보덕굴>, <내금강 진주담>과 같이 금강산 진경을 그린 대작들을 비롯해, 1977년도에 《한국 회화 유럽 순회전》에 출품된 <외금강 삼선암 추색> 등이 전시됩니다. 소정은 유명한 서화가 소림 조석진의 손자로 어릴 적부터 그림에 남다른 재능을 나타냈으며, 조선미술전람회, 대한민국미술전람회 등 당대 대표적인 전시에 입선과 특선, 추천작가 및 심사위원 등을 역임하며 국내 화단의 대표 작가로 인정 받았습니다. 초기에는 외조부 소림의 영향으로 전형적인 수묵 위주의 문인화적 화풍을 구사했으나, 이후에는 서구의 사생(寫生)개념을 바탕으로 관념 산수를 벗어나 현실경을 추구함으로써 근대적인 산수화를 개척하였습니다. 소정은 우리나라의 자연을 전에 없던 구도와 현실적인 선, 그리고 기백 넘치는 필치로 한국화의 새로운 시대성을 제시한 화가로 알려져 있습니다.

이번 전시가 한국 화단에 활기를 불어넣고, 아울러 한국화의 아름다움과 멋을 국내외에 널리 알릴 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대합니다.
