Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Nothing, But, a solo exhibition of photographer Myoung Ho Lee who has earned international acclaim for his poetic yet philosophical work. This exhibition introduces his key series "Tree" and "Mirage" as well as previously undisclosed works "Nothing But" and "9 Minute’ Layers".

If Myoung Ho Lee’s Art-Act Project uncovered reality in installing a canvas behind a tree, or created an unreality by placing it in the middle of a desert, the canvas within "Nothing, But", merely stands. Having relinquished the function of revealing or creating something, the canvas encompasses everything precisely because it does not offer anything in specific. This gesture infinitely expands Lee’s creative world of approaching traces of being and the essence of existence.

Captured from a vertical perspective, the new series "Tree……" and "Stone……" presents the relationship between the observer and subject, and extended sense of time and space. This exhibition, composed of works rooting from reality and unreality, the in-between or even territories beyond, does not limit itself to the shift in perception based on materialized images–instead, it aims to encompass even the experiences of the invisible.

Born in 1975, Myoung Ho Lee studied photography at Chung-Ang University, proceeding to hold solo exhibitions at Yossi Milo Gallery (New York, 2009/2017), Sungkok Art Museum (Seoul, 2013), Savina Museum (Seoul, 2017), and others. His works are housed at major art institutions including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, National Gallery of Victoria, Museo Arte Contemporáneo in Salta, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Seoul Museum of Art. The artist lives and works in Seoul, pursuing various projects such as the 'Player Project' celebrating the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, public campaign Awakening the Senses organized by Korean Teachers’ Credit Union and 'Vine Project' in collaboration with Château Laroque.

갤러리현대는 시적이면서도 철학적인 사진작업으로 세계적인 주목을 받고 있는 사진작가 이명호의 개인전 《어떤 것도 아닌, 그러나》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 대표 연작인 'Tree', 'Mirage' 등과 더불어 신작인 'Nothing But', '9 Minutes’ Layers' 등 20여 점의 다양한 작품으로 구성된다.

그 동안 이명호의 ‘예술-행위 프로젝트(Art-Act Project)’가 나무 뒤에 캔버스를 세움으로써 현실을 드러내거나(再現), 사막 속에 캔버스를 설치함으로써 비현실을 만들어냈다면(再演), 이번 전시에서 처음 소개되는 'Nothing But' 작업의 캔버스는 그저 덩그러니 서 있다. 무언가를 드러내거나 만들어내는 역할을 상실한 캔버스는 되려 제시하는 어떤 것이 없기에 모든 것을 품고 있다는 뜻을 내포하며, 존재의 흔적과 실체의 본질에 접근하고자 하는 이명호의 작업 세계를 무한히 확장시킨다.

기존의 수평적 시선에서 벗어나, 새로이 수직적 시선으로 탄생한 'Tree……' 와 'Stone……' 연작에서는 관찰자와 피사체의 관계성, 시간과 공간의 확장성을 선명하게 제시한다. 현실과 비현실, 그리고 그 사이 혹은 그 너머에서 비롯된 작업으로 이루어진 이번 전시는 단지 구현된 가시적 이미지를 통한 인식 전환의 경험을 넘어, 미처 구현되지 아니한 비가시적 이미지로의 체험까지를 아우르고자 한다.

이명호는 1975년 생으로, 중앙대학교와 동 대학원에서 사진을 전공하였으며, 요시밀로갤러리(뉴욕, 2009/2017), 성곡미술관(서울, 2010), 사비나미술관(서울, 2017) 등에서 개인전을 가졌다. 이명호의 작품은 역사적인 사진 컬렉션으로 유명한 프랑스국립도서관을 비롯하여, 장폴게티미술관, 암스테르담사진미술관, 국립빅토리아갤러리, 살타현대미술관, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등 국내외 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다. 작가는 현재 서울을 근거로 거주 및 활동하고 있으며, 2018평창동계올림픽 기념 'Player Project', 한국교직원공제회 공익 캠페인 '감각을 깨우다', 샤또 라호크(Château Laroque) 협업 'Vine Project' 등 전시 외 예술의 활용과 참여 등에도 깊은 관심을 두고 다양한 활동을 이어가고 있다.
