Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present a solo exhibition of François Morellet(1926-2016), a key figure in the development of geometrical abstract art. The exhibition presents 23 works whose years of production range from 1969 to 2016 – from the year when the artist began his own artistic career after the dissolution of GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel, 1961-1968) to the end of his life. The works presented in the exhibition also display various themes and materials explored by the artist.
From the early stage of his career, François Morellet began immersing himself in the abstract art based on a pictorial language of simple geometric elements such as lines and squares. At the same time, he actively embraced industrial materials that include neon tubes, iron, adhesive tape, negating the notion of an artist as a creative genius. Randomness, accidental choice, wordplay, and audience participation contributed to the establishment of the artist’s unique aesthetics and practice.
As a way of commemorating Morellet’s oeuvre, the exhibition presents the artist’s major works including an enlarged pattern installation of Random distribution of 40.000 squares using the odd and even numbers of a telephone directory, as well as works that employ the mathematical constant π (Pi) which the artist started using since the late 1990s. The exhibition also presents a number of “3D” paintings that the artist created in his last years.
Born in Cholet, France in 1926, François Morellet has been laid to rest on the 10th of May, 2016. As an artist, Morellet has left a significant mark in the history of the 20th century art. In order to honor the French master’s life and spirit, Dia Art Foundation will host a retrospective exhibition of the artist in the coming October. MACBA in Buenos Aires will also host a retrospective exhibition in 2018.
갤러리현대는 기하학적 추상미술의 발전에 중요한 역할을 한 작가로 평가 받는 프랑수아 모를레(1926-2016)의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 프랑수아 모를레가 GRAV(시각예술연구회, 1961-1968) 해체 이후 독자적인 활동을 시작한 1969년의 실크스크린 작품부터 그가 영면에 들기 전까지 예술적 열정을 잃지 않고 제작한 2016년의 작품까지 총 23점의, 그가 일생 동안 천착한 다양한 주제와 기법의 작품들이 선보인다.
1950년대부터 선, 정사각형 등의 기하학적으로 가장 단순한 요소들에 바탕을 둔 추상미술에 몰두하기 시작한 프랑수아 모를레는 그 활동의 초기부터 예술가 개인의 천재성과 창조성을 거부하는, 동시에 네온, 철, 테이프 등의 공업재료를 적극적으로 이용하는 방법들을 발전시켜 나갔다. 그리고 여기에, 무작위, 우연적 선택, 언어 유희, 관객 참여 등의 요소가 더해지며 프랑수아 모를레만의 독특한 미학과 작품 세계가 정립되었다.
이번 전시에는, 이와 같이 다양한 요소들을 포함하고 있는 프랑수아 모를레의 작품 세계를 기억하고 추모하고자, 그의 대표작 중 하나로 평가 받는 <전화번호부에서 찾은 홀수와 짝수에 따라 무작위적으로 배열된 40,000개의 정사각형들> 패턴의 벽면 설치, 모를레가 1990년대 후반부터 본격적으로 선보이기 시작한 “π (원주율)”를 활용한 작품, 모를레 생전의 마지막 연작인 “3D” 작품 등이 선보인다.
1926년 프랑스 숄레(Cholet)에서 태어난 프랑수아 모를레는 전후 미술사에 커다란 족적을 남기고 2016년 5월 10일 영면에 들었다. 프랑스 거장의 삶과 정신을 기리고자 뉴욕의 디아 미술 재단(Dia Art Foundation)은 프랑수아 모를레의 폭넓은 작품 세계 전반에 대한 회고전을 개최할 예정이고, 부에노스 아이레스 현대미술관(MACBA) 역시 2018년 가을 대형 회고전을 예정하고 있다.
