Ryan Gander conceptually and wittily portrays stories of art, culture, and the artist’s personal experiences through various mediums of installation, media, painting, sculpture, photography, and texts.
Ryan Gander’s works are complex and mischievous, and within them, main themes are cleverly veiled with its meanings subtly implicated. Non-existence relationship between objects in different nature from everyday monotonous life and obliteration of realization upon existing notions are brought out onto the surface which gives room for an open interpretation. Other than the exploration of ambiguous relationships, the spectator’s imaginations and movements are crucial elements in Ryan Gander’s works. ‘Storytelling’ is the most significant part in the artist’s artworks carrying individual open ending. Ryan Gander hopes for the spectator to put down existing ideas, elitism of the art world, or any sort of knowledge on art, and to continue on the story that he had started. The artist does not settle in one particular style or category but challenges himself upon existing ideas with variety of mediums that result as sculptures, installation, language, and commercial products.
In this exhibition, recurring theme in Ryan Gander’s variety of works such as sculptures and paintings relating to childhood projections and children’s innate creative sensibilities and reference to modernism and witty interpretation of art history will be presented along with new installation works that project onto contemporary selfie culture and narcissism.
Ryan Gander was born in Chester, UK, in 1976. He currently works and lives in London. He had gained global attention when he participated in 2011 Venice Biennial and 2012 Kassel dOCUMENTA 13. Since then, he had solo exhibitions in prestigious art institutions including National Museum of Art Osaka, 2017, Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, 2016, Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, 2015, Manchester City Art Gallery, 2014, Le Plateau, 2013, Palais de Tokyo, 2012, New York Guggenheim Museum, 2010, and Museum Moderner Kunst, 2007. Recently, Ryan Gander received OBE (Officer of Order of the British Empire), and also in 2009, he was awarded Zurich Art Prize and Paul Hamlyn Award in 2008.
갤러리현대에서는 영국의 현대 개념미술 작가인 라이언 갠더(Ryan Gander, b. 1976)의 ’소프트 모더니즘 Soft Modernism’ 展을 3월 29일(수)일부터 5월 7일(일)까지 개최한다. 라이언 갠더는 설치, 미디어, 회화, 조각, 사진, 텍스트 등 다양한 장르를 아우르며 예술, 문화, 그리고 작가의 개인적인 경험에 관한 이야기들을 개념적으로 재치 있게 풀어낸다.
복잡하면서도 장난기 가득한 라이언 갠더의 작품은 주요 포인트가 교묘히 숨겨져 있고, 의미가 미묘하게 함축되어 있다. 단조로운 일상에서 이질적인 물체들과 존재하지 않는 관계들을 끌어내고, 기존 관념에 대한 인식의 전복과 그로 인한 상상의 여지를 준다. 애매한 관계들을 탐구하는 것 외에 관람자의 상상력과 움직임도 라이언 갠더의 작업에서 필수적 요소가 된다. 각각 열린 결말의 이야기를 담고 있는 그의 작품에서 ‘스토리텔링(Storytelling)’은 가장 큰 부분이라고 할 수 있다. 작가는 관객에게 깊게 배어있는 오래된 사고, 미술계의 엘리트주의나 미술에 관한 지식을 내려놓고 그저 작품을 보며 떠오르는 것들로 작가가 시작한 이야기를 이어가길 권한다. 또한, 특정 스타일이나 카테고리에 안주하지 않으며 조각과 설치작품, 언어와 상업상품에 이르는 다양한 재료를 통해 기존의 아이디어에 도전한다.
이번 전시에서는 작가의 다양한 작업들 중에서 지속적으로 반복되는 주제인 어린 시절의 투영과 어린아이의 장난기와 창의적 감수성에서 영감을 얻은 조각, 평면 작품과 모더니즘과 미술사를 재치 있게 재해석한 작품, 그리고 이번에 새롭게 선보이는 현시대 셀피(selfie)문화와 나르시시즘(narcissism)에 주목한 설치 작품들이 전시된다.
라이언 갠더는 1976년 체스터(Chester)에서 태어나 런던에서 작업하고 있다. 2011년 베니스 비엔날레(Venice Biennial), 2012년 카셀 dOCUMENTA 13에서 큰 주목을 받은 그는 오사카국립미술관(2017), 벨기에의 돈트-데넨스 뮤지엄(2016)과 몬트리올 미술관(2016), 콜로라도 아스펜 미술관(2015), 밴쿠버 현대 미술관(2015), 멜버른 호주 현대 미술 센터(2015), 맨체스터 현대미술 센터(2014), 파리 플라토 미술 센터(2013), 파리 팔레 드 도쿄(2012), 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관(2010), 비엔나 현대미술관(2007) 등 다수의 개인전을 가졌다. 또한 OBE(Officer of order of the British Empire)훈장(2017)을 수여받았고, 영국 폴햄린상(2008), 취리히 예술상(2009) 등 다양한 상을 수상했다.
