Kim Guiline’s solo exhibition will present series of his major works such as Untitled from the 1960s, Visible, Invisible from the 1970s, along with more recent works of the 2000s, which will help bringing conversance with the bodies of Kim’s oeuvre.

In 1960s, Kim Guiline worked on objectifying the flat surface painting of pure black and white. In Visible, Invisible series from the 1970s, he composed smaller squares within a square canvas to deepen the monochrome painting. Later in Inside, Outside series, Kim identified the dualistic relationship of using vivid primary color and dot as a base unit.

Use of oil paint, while pursuing the oil painting without the oiliness is Kim Guiline’s iconic way of working. Kim filters and eliminates the oil from the paint using a newspaper. Such process allows him to achieve a mattified canvas. Kim repeatedly apply dozens of layers of black and white paints to complete the work, which titles reference from French philosopher Merleau-Ponty’s The Visible and the Invisible.

This exhibition is expected provide a comprehensive understanding of Kim Guiline’s oeuvre by bring together rarely-shown works of the artist from the 1960s to 2000s.

이번 김기린의 개인전은 작가의 1960년대의 <무제> 작품부터, 1970년대의 <Visible, Invisible>, 그리고 이후 2000년대까지의 작품을 선보이는 자리로 그의 작업 세계를 이해할 수 있는 주요 작품들이 전시된다.

김기린은 그의 작업을 통해 60년대에는 순수한 흑과 백의 평면회화를 오브제화 하는 작업경향을 보여주었다면, 70년대에는 사각의 캔버스 안에 작은 사각형을 구성하여 평면 모노크롬 작업을 심화시키는 <Visible, Invisible> 작품을 선보였고, 이후 <Inside, Outside> 작품에 이르러서는 화려한 원색과 점을 기본단위로 사용하는 이원적 관계에 대한 확인 작업을 보여주었다.

김기린이 보여주는 제작 방식의 특징은, 작품을 제작할 때 항상 유화만을 사용하고 최대한의 기름을 뺀 유화의 느낌을 추구한다는 것이다. 따라서 유화를 사용할 때 미리 신문지로 물감의 기름기를 걸러내는 특별한 작업 과정을 거쳐서 캔버스 표면에 매트한 질감을 표현할 수 있도록 하는 자신만의 방법을 고안해 내었다. 현상학자 메를로 퐁티의 『보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것』에서 제목을 따온 김기린의 작품들은 수십 차례에 걸쳐 검정 혹은 흰색 물감을 붓으로 반복적으로 칠하고 점을 찍는 작업을 통해 완성된다.

이번 전시는 그 동안 많이 공개되지 않았던 김기린의 60년대 시기의 작품부터 최근의 2000년대까지의 작품들을 한 자리에 전시하여 보는 이로 하여금 좀 더 깊이 작가의 작품 세계를 이해하고 공감 할 수 있게 만들어 줄 것이라고 기대한다.
