GALLERY HYUNDAI is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Suh Se Ok (b.1929), also known by his art name Sanjeong, from April 12 through May 15, 2016. The exhibition carries a great significance, since it is held immediately after the special exhibition at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, and in 20 years at GALLERY HYUNDAI.

Suh, who tried to interpret authentic oriental painting in a modern way, caused a new wave to Korean Contemporary art by breaking the traditional approach and pioneering modernized orientalism based on Abstraction. Beginning in the late 1970s, Suh immersed himself in his People series. The exhibition will be featuring Suh’s most recent works along with his earlier pieces from the 1990s, comprised mainly of his People series. The joys and sorrows of life are reflected through wielded brushes with boldness, simplified point and line.

Suh Se Ok was born in Daegu in 1929 and graduated from College of Fine Art, Seoul National University. Suh made his debut as an artist during his college years in 1949 when he won the Prime Minister’s Prize at the 1st Korean Art Exhibition. He founded a progressive group called Mungnimhoe that first led the modernization of traditional oriental painting. Suh’s solo exhibitions were held in Pacific Asia Museum in California, USA, Daejeon Museum of Art, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea. He also participated in prominent biennales including Sao Paulo Biennale in 1963, and Cannes International Painting Festival in 1969. He served as a professor at Seoul National University for forty years, from 1955. Owing to Suh’s pivotal contribution to contemporary Korean art scene allowed him to be awarded the Order of Civil Merit−pomegranate medal in 1993, the National Academy of Art of the Korea Prize in 2007, and the Silver Order of Culture in 2012.

갤러리현대에서는 4월 12일부터 5월 15일까지 산정(山丁) 서세옥의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 국립현대미술관 특별전에 이어 개최되는 대규모 개인전이자, 갤러리현대에서 1974년, 1989년, 1996년 이후 20년만에 개최되는 네 번째 개인전이다.

정통 동양화를 현대적으로 재해석하며 새로운 회화를 시도한 서세옥은 1960년대의 수묵 추상을 통해 한국미술의 현대화 운동에 앞장서며 한국 추상의 새로운 장을 열었고, 70년대 이후 일관되게 인간시리즈에 몰두했다. 이번 전시는 1990년대부터 근작까지의 작품을 집약적으로 보여주는 자리로 산정의 인간시리즈를 선보인다. 대범한 붓질, 단순한 점과 선만으로 사람의 형상을 표현한 서화백의 작품을 통해 인류의 희로애락을 엿볼 수 있다.

1929년 대구에서 태어난 서세옥은 1950년 서울대학교 미술대학 동양화과을 졸업하였다. 1949년 제1회 대한민국미술전람회에서 국무총리상을 수상하며 화단에 등단하였으며, 묵림회를 결성하여 동양화의 현대화에 앞장섰다. 작가는 미국 캘리포니아 퍼시픽아시아박물관, 대전시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 등 유수의 국내외 미술관에서 개인전을 열었으며, 1963년 상파울로비엔날레, 1969년 이탈리아 국제회화비엔날레와 프랑스 칸느 국제회화제 등 수많은 비엔날레에 참여하였다. 1955년부터 40년간 서울대학교 미술대학 교수로 재직한 서세옥은 1993년 국민훈장 석류장 수상, 2007년 대한민국예술원상, 2012년 은관문화훈장을 수상하였다.
