Gallery HYUNDAI is proud to announce an exhibition Nam June Paik: When He was in Seoul, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Paik’s death. This will mark the artist’s seventh solo exhibition with the gallery.

The exhibition will be consisted of works created mainly in 1980s and 1990s and introduced between 1988 and 2000 for the first time in Seoul, where his artistic career has just been known only after a successful satellite show ‘Good Morning Mr. Owell’ aired via KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) on January first in 1984.

Gallery HYUNDAI organized his first solo exhibition in Seoul in 1988, introducing his sculptural video pieces. The first kind of TV robot series of Korean historical figures which was sensational works to the most Korean audience as he freely used antique television cabinets and the newest technology along with the edited moving images. Most of works exhibited in Seoul have remained in Seoul by supports of passionate art institutions and collectors as an important cultural asset of Korean-born-global artist who was embraced by the whole world and made a profound impact in the 20th century art history.

Paik’s legendary shamanic performance, <A Pas de Loup > dedicated to Joseph Beuys, executed at the courtyard of gallery HYUNDAI in the summer of 1990 will be the most significant element of this exhibition. Re-presentation of objects Paik used during 45-minute-long shamanic ritual performance will provide a new context, as it comes out to the public in 26 years to manifest the spiritual roots of a visionary artist.

This exhibition aims to highlight the legacy he left in Seoul in the history of Korean contemporary Korean art history by re-visiting his then cutting-edge works created between 1980s and 1990s in 20 years.

 

갤러리현대는 2016년 1월 28일부터 4월 3일까지 세계적인 비디오아티스트 백남준 선생의 작고 10주기를 맞이하여 백남준 선생의 한국에서의 활동, 유산과 그 의미, 중요성을 되돌아보는 전시를 마련한다. 이번 전시는 갤러리현대와 백남준 선생 사이의 각별했던 우정을 바탕 삼아 그가 한국에 남긴 주요한 작품 40여 점을 선별하여 선보이는 자리이다. 특히 1990년 여름, 백남준 선생이 자신의 평생의 친구였던 요셉 보이스를 추모하며 갤러리현대 뒷마당에서 행한 진혼굿 퍼포먼스 <늑대 걸음으로 (A Pas de Loup)> 이후 소장해온 당시의 오브제들과 기록들을 26년만에 전시 할 예정이다.

1988년 9월 14일, 백남준 선생의 한국 최초 개인전을 개최한 갤러리현대는 이후 수 차례 백남준 선생의 전시를 개최하고 한국에서의 다양한 활동을 지원함으로써, 선생의 위대한 예술세계와 정신이 널리 알려질 수 있도록 끊임없이 노력해왔다. 이번 전시를 통하여 국내외 많은 분들이 백남준 선생의 삶과 예술세계를 다시 한 번 돌아볼 수 있는 뜻 깊은 기회가 되기를 기대한다.
